Default Cam Choice for MTI 2E Heads, Advice Please

After much debate i've finally decided against the N2O route and decided to go with a heads/cam setup. After a lot of reading, lots of people seem very satisfied with the MTI heads and the 2E LS1 heads are within my price range. I've seen a lot of people use the X1 cam with good results (430+rwhp and 400rwtq), but i was wondering if i will see better results with R1, Z1, or S1 cams? Will there be any issues running the bigger cams with a stock short block?

I will also have Jethot longtube headers, Jethot ORY, LS6 intake, ported throttle body. The drivetrain and suspension will be more than reinforced for the added power, Denny's shaft, spohn TA, drag rear sway and shocks, etc. Shortblock has 17,000 miles on it at the moment. I am not worried about any smog issues. Car is by no means a daily driver, but will be driven 500 miles per month on average. I will also have a full tune done after the install. If anyone can also suggest an optimal compression ratio (shaved the heads?). My goal is obviously to make as much power as possible, but this will not be a trailer queen.

The specs for all the cams for those that don't know are...
X1-230 227 .591 .571 112
R1-232 236 .575 .578 114
Z1-236 236 .585 .585 112
S1-244 244 .612 .612 112

Thank you very much in advance for any feedback.

Well in my opinion I would rule out the S1 right off the bat because the 2E heads flow drops off fast after .600 lift on there website so that is why in my opinion it is gone. I can not say for sure but I think I would choose either the X1 or R1 But what do I know I have never run any of them! Some one else with experience with them can coment better. Good luck! and remember there are other choices so don't limit yourself. FMS, THUNDER RACING, and more if you look.

Of your list, the X1 would be my choice for a street/strip car.

You might consider some 4:10 gears to compliment the X1 cam.

Whew, you're going to have a tire shredding combo there! I hope you like buying tires.

I would go with the R1 I plan on putting it in my car but on a 112 or 110 LSA.

Either the X1 or R1 would be excellent choices for your setup with the X1 being a little bit more streetable.

If it was a daily driver I'd do the X1 - 500 miles per month, I'd do the R1.

Good tuning is a must!

Thanks for all the feedback everyone. Equandt, i do have a 12-bolt with 4.11's so i have the gearing covered. I assume the R1 would have a bit more lope than the X1, and if on a 112 would bring the rpm range out a little further and lope a bit more. I do like a cam with a bit of lope, and idle issues i don't think will be a problem, i will have a full tune done after the install. The graph on MTI's web site show's the heads flow well up to .650 lift, would there be any reason to count out the Z1 or S1 cam?

I have a freind that has bought these heads and we are about to install them so I will see how they perform. And that was a mistake on my part I was thinking of where the biggest differences in the 2E and 2R flow numbers, and not where they stopped flowing well. But still I have not seen and huge improvement from what I have seen on the forums as far as HP/TQ with any thing bigger if you are planning to drive on the street at all. JMO. You may have a different plan thought Good luck!

Thanks again everyone for the feedback. I would like the car to go low 11's or high 10's after the heads/cam install. Race weight will be right about 3250 or less with driver and full drag suspension, slicks, the whole nine. My main goal is reliability more than anything else. The car can lope and make a whole bunch of noise as long as I can drive it out to the drag strip, take an occational trip to Vegas, and take it out on the weekends. If anyone has a sound byte, vid, whatever of their car with the X1 or R1 cam that wouldn't mind sharing, i'd really like to here/see it. Thanks very much again.

Thunder's TR230 and the X-1 seem to make the same power. However, the TR230 has significantly less lift which equals less wear nad tear on your valve train. I would go with the TR230.

So what is your decision? more lift or more duration. Im making the same type of decision.

After talking with MTI, i think i will go with the X1 cam. They said the difference going to the R1 or bigger would not yield significantly better results with a stock short block and will only make for a more difficult tune, and worse idle quality.
