Default Help!! Where can I find rocker shims to get my Comp R lifter preload right?

Other than going to say home depot, does anyone carry these? I don't have time to order custom length pushrods, and would rather spare the expense.

I didn't realize running comp R lifters would be such a PITA.....I might just keep the stock lifters if I don't find an easy solution.

Verbs, try the local Ford dealership. Ask for the rocker shims for a 5.0
I think the shims are .030's and maybe .015's. My 99 T/A has the rockers shimmed to get the preload exact.

Some of the large dealerships may have them in stock.

Also TEA might have them as they do lot's of Ford stuff if you have to order them.

I don't know much about internals ... why do you need shims? .. I just ordered some 5.3L heads with CompR lifters and 977 springs I believe .. is this going to be an issue for me?

thanks,
Crowley

Setting the preload on a set of comp R lifters is tedious without adjustable rockers, but it is a very important step. Getting the right valvetrain geometry is a critical part of getting the motor to run correctly. The comp R's like to have less preload, if I recall correctly, than the stock lifters. So either you will need shims with them, custom pushrods, or adjustable rockers. At any rate the preload must be within spec, which is a much tighter spec than the stockers have.

They are morons at the Ford dealership. I'm calling MTI.

I used the R lifters; they are the same height as the stock lifter ...so I beleive they should not be the cause of the wrong preload...

...did you mill the heads? ...are you using stock rockers? does you cam have the same base circle as the stock cam?

...anyway ...you might want to consider getting a new set of pushrods to match your valvetrain setup....

...just a thought...

yes the heads are milled .010, I'm using Yella Terra Rockers, and I have a G5X3 cam in the car.

I have different preload on every lifter on every cylinder.....

Cylinder# Intake Preload/Exhaust Preload
1 .025/.046
3 .026/.047
5 .027/.048
7 .024/.049

2 .017/.032
4 .015/.033
6 .016/.034
8 .018/.035

I ended up ordering the Ford Shims in .015 and .030 sizes, but the problem I have is that my Yella Terras are attached on each cylinder, so for example, on cylinder 1 I can't use a .15 shim on the intake and a .30 shim on the exhaust because wouldn't that cause some sort of imbalance since they're connected?

LG suggested for example, using .30 shims on all the passenger side rockers, getting the preload to the following:

Cylinder# Intake Preload/Exhaust Preload

2 -.013/.002
4 -.015/.003
6 -.014/.004
8 -.012/.005

Then I would use lash caps on the top of the valve stems to get the preload back to where I'd like it to be since lash caps come in more sizes and offer more "adjustability" if you would.

its not so much of a problem that the heads are milled..its that the Comp R's only require .002"-.004" preload..anymore than that could result in lifter failure

I found shim stock at a local industrial supply house. For about $20 I got a roll 6"x50". You can get it in varying thickness and make an ***-load of shims with the one roll. I think it was called 'Shim in a can'.

I think you have a whole new problem with 977's. If I'm not mistaken, the 977's is a longer spring which requires longer valves. This throw's off the geometry and what people have been doing is using 7.2" pushrods and shimming the rockers to use with comp R's. You should check with the head builder, is it ABS?

Verbs, I know a number of people running comp R's at .010", do you really need the lash caps?

Dan
