2004 gto cam suggestions
Hey everybody, im well aware that it is still summertime but this winter i plan on doing a cam upgrade in my 2004 M6 Gto. Im ordering LT's very soon but other than that i only have a cai and a predator tuner. I've been looking at kits offered by texas speed and flowtech. I dont know too much about all the specs and everything, but i want something that can still be my summer DD... so nothing too aggresive. Has anyone here bought cam kits from either of these companies? Any help would be appreicated. Thanks!

Have a friend with a Vengeance VRX2 cam which is 224/228 in his '04 A4 GTO and it's a good cam as well. All of the cams mentioned by myself and Felix C are mild cams that should satisfy you. They're not over aggressive and don't require the valvespring/valvetrain maintenance that a lot of bigger cams do.

Go futral. I run the f13. Alittle steeper than the grinds listed but they use nice cam motion lobes that run alot smother than similar sized cams from other brands and even some of the smaller ones. U should be right around 400 and bottom 12s or better with a good tire and still being able to idle smooth at stops and in the cold without some crazy bucking or idling problems. Good tune provided ofcourse.

I would recommend looking into our 228R camshaft on a 112LSA for your 6 speed GTO. Specs are 228/228, .588/.588 on a 112LSA. This cam has great drivability with a proper tune, and a great sound to go along with it. We typically see 45+ rwhp with the addition of this cam, and offer it in a complete package that includes the cam, .600 lift beehive springs, and chromoly pushrods for right at 599.99. Feel free to give us a call with any questions you have we are happy to help.

Monaro folk down under who have been driving these things for years do appear to prefer milder cams for DD use. Especially the 220 from TSP on a 112.
I think people in the USA cam the GTO as if it were a much lighter car such as an F-body or Corvette. More midrange needed for the GTO.

Yes the 228R is still considered a mild cam even in a GTO, and works very well. The 228R is a very fitting choice for what the OP is asking for and should provide a very nice broad powerband.

I may be contradicting what I had said earlier but I am trying to be at 360+whp (current whp ~ 300+). And or a cam that's borderline of mild if that makes sense lol

As far as negative effects, I just dont want to put too much stress on my car being that i will drive it for about 6-7 months out of the year. I want to get as much hp as i can without having something that would make you think twice about driving it daily. And i really dont know how much hp to expect out of a cam thats in between mild and agressive.

How much money FI you have to spend? The reason I ask is a good set of heads or even your stock heads ported right will give you huge gains with the addition of a cam....personally is look for something a hair bigger than the 228 and get your heads worked over. My first cam swap in my 04 GTO was a 220/224 and it was noticable, but after s week I wished I had gone bigger.

Heres the thing, im 19 years old and after i graduated i got a decent paying job for my age. Saved up some money for a year and got a 04 goat (ive wanted one since the first time i saw one), would of rather had a 6.0 but the price was right lol. Anyways, i plan on spending about 600-800$ on a cam kit with part of my tax return. In the future, maybe the winter after or potentially in the nicer months of next year im going to have my heads ported. My best friends dad owns a speed shop and there gonna do the head work for ~500$ or so.

Not to mention it is a very popular camshaft in similar applications, and it always has positive feedback!

So with a nice tune, jba headers/midpipes, cai and your reccomended cam kit what would be a rough estimate of whp? considering im at about 300 whp currently.Or is that not a question you could answer? Either way let me know. Thanks!
