California only Mobil 1 engine oils?
I went down to my local NAPA store to buy some Mobil 1 0w40, and noticed that they (Napa) have a special designator on the 0w40 and some other passenger car oils..... It says "MOBIL 1 - CALIFORNIA" while the old oils and trucks oils say "MOBIL 1 - REGULAR STATES." (You can see these notations on their website.)
Does anyone know anything about this? Is California forcing Exxon to make special oils for CA? If so, what are the differences. My guess is less ZDDP.

GM uses Mobil 1 in all their high performance cars because Mobil 1 gives them a sweet deal knowing the demographic of people who buy them will be like "OMG I have to use Mobil 1 for the rest of my life" Nothing wrong with it, but your just paying for the brand name as all other motor oils do the same thing these days.

^i have one with over 200k miles and not a bit of sludge on tear down...had a 50k mile motor that used regular castrol and was sludge city! I'll take a higher mileage motor that was treated to Mobil 1, or any quality full synthetic any day of the week compared to the alternative...

There are those who "believe" in advertizing and there are those who know what used oil analysis is.
An engine lasting 300K is NOTHING happens all the time with police cars turned taxi that never got anything but bulk oil from a 55gallon drum.
I have a 227k mile LT1 in my garage that test 5% leakdown and never had special treatment.
Engines don't wear they way they used to up through the 80s. Modern port fuel injection is a HUGE part of that, they don't run as rich as long at startup. Your overmarketted mediocre oil is not.

I have done a little reading and it seems to me that a big part of the Dexos thing is making them a thin 30weight which is probably mostly CAFE and maybe it helps a little with the DOD stuff not needing to work over as wide a range of viscosities as 30weight generally means plus the anti aeration specs which I believe are for the DOD too.
For those that are going to cry foul 5w-30 is NOT a viscosity measurement, the 30 is a RANGE and staying on the thin end of the range can pay off CAFE wise. Plus they get to make more money licensing the stuff.

And a rec for you, good sir!
Seriously, Castrol Edge, Gold Bottle w/ Titanium. Run it and tell me your valvetrain doesn't get quieter. This is coming from a guy that was religious with the Mobil1.
Any of us with an aftermarket cam should really be running a Zinc additive to begin with, like ZDDPlus or something. As the formulas change, the less wear additives and more detergent we get.
