Default LQ9 Build Suggestions

Hi everyone,
I just picked up a low mile LQ9 from an '04 Escalade that will be going into my '67 Camaro, and would like some suggestions on what heads and cam to go with. I have a T56 arriving later this week.

My first thoughts for the heads were stock 243/799's or L92/LS3. Someone else suggested a set of 5.3's, but I heard they don't flow as well, just give a compression bump?

Important info:
- I will be using an Edelbrock Vic Jr. EFI intake with a 4 barrel throttle body
- This is not a daily driver, but not a strip car either, so driveability is somewhat important
- Budget is always a concern...

I want the Vic Jr/TB setup so it kind of retains that old school look, but with the advantage of EFI. I know that the Vic Jr. is better for high rpm, and gives up a little on the low end, so I'd like to find a set of heads and cam that can pick up some of that low end grunt. Once I figure out a set of heads, then I can start thinking about the cam. Also, I already have the Accufab 4150 TB, I don't have the Vic Jr. yet since I know they make one for the cathedral ports and one for the rectangular ports.

For a budget deal grab a set of 243's and have a GOOD vj/bowl blend done on them. Grab a super Vic and a cam to match and you'll see upper 400's rwhp

How streetable is that Super Vic, and would my Accufab 4150 bolt right up?

Just get the stock heads you have now ported by like AI and sized for proper compression.

Won't I run into PTV clearance issues if I have the heads milled too much?

What's a better option?

-Higher flowing heads/smaller cam/higher compression (ported/milled 317's)
-Higher flowing heads/bigger cam/lower compression (ported/unmilled 317's)
-Lower flowing heads/bigger cam/higher compression (stock 243/799's)

243's and 317's flow about the same with 243's being slightly better. Use the best head you can with the most compression for the fuel your running and cam it accordingly

Forget the rectangle ports if you're concerned with low end. A set of 243/799 castings with a good valvejob and blending will work really well. The 5.3L truck castings are another option. They're dirt cheap, but really need a bigger valve to be a decent performance oriented head.

You can get the chambers you desire without milling. Ai would weld and fill the chambers to desired volume. keeping stock valves would then leave you with stock ptv clearance. I've used that tech before on a setup where I wanted 59cc chambers but no mill. I used 241 castings to obtain my results. Any head that can flow 300cfm by .600 lifts would be plenty for huge power on stock cubes.
