Default Air pocket in cooling system?

Just got done with a head change. Everything went well except it's trying to run hot on me. Just from reading I'm guessing I've got an air pocket in the cooling system. What is the trick to bleeding this air out of the cooling system? This is on a 2001 Z28. I never had this problem before the head swap.

what i have usually done is to rev the engine with the rad cap off, and keep it topped off as the bubbles make it through the system. Has worked well for me.

you can also try bleeding the system with the engine running from the coolant line that goes to the throttle body. again, rev the engine a decent bit to move things around. also, crank the heater valve all the way to "hot".

I make sure the coolant is topped off, start the car cold w/ the rad. cap off and let it get to temp, revving the motor to 1-2K perodically, top off coolant if needed and done.

OK. Thanks for the quick replies. I'll try these out and hopefully it'll take care of my problem.

Yes, thank you for being more specific (in terms of a cold engine) don't want anyone to get burned.

Take the top radiator hose off that goes to through the waterpump to the block, pour coolant in the block through that hose until the hose is full, then connect it back to the radiator. top of your radiator and overflow tank, you should be good to go.

Bleed air from the steam crossover tube, remove the hose and use clear tube to direct the air/coolant away into a bottle... you will see when air is bled, only coolant will come out.

or you can just buy a radiator coolant burping kit from napa for like 15 bucks. Comes with universal radiator cap fittings which you just fill the top container that plugs to your cap half way with water. Let your car idle until it reaches full temp and watch the water within the cap container gurgle air out of the system. No hassle and 0 mess. Just my preff

I had the same problem last week with my head swap. I took off the cap and kept filling up the radiator as the bubbles came out. It took a while to get to the point where it would not over heat. Even a few days later i did it again as i noticed that the temps were randomly climbing.

Best money i ever spent here. I use it every single time for radiator refills.
