Needs pointers on Heads & Cam
I was thinking this(98 Trans Am) since I need the car to pass the sniffer in Cali. 224/224 114 Cam. I posted this in the Western section with limited response.

I have a 3500 stall converter, LS6 Intake, MAC Headers, 3.42 Gears.

MAC's are a Mid-Length header, best bang for the buck back in the day. I run the MAC cats that came with the headers. I am on a budget so I am not going to spend $2,500+ for a Heads & Cam kit. I have done a lot of research on a smoggable setup & the 224 224 114 always comes up as the cam to get with a good tune, I am just wondering if this is still a good setup or is there something comparable in price that is better($1,800)

FYI, the MAC mid-length headers are not smog legal in Ca.. You would need to run a set of shorty headers that have a CARB EO #, and run the stock cats in the stock location to pass the visual inspection. IMO, you need to run a cam with like a 8* split at a minimum, like a EPS TT2 (218/226 113lsa), to help offset the more restrictive exhaust and stock heads.
