Lifter tick stock 5.3 any fix minus replacing?
A guy I know has a bone stock 5.3. When cold it has a terrible and I mean terrible lifter tick (not piston slap). Once it gets hot as in ran for 10 minutes the tick goes completely goes away. Hes ran Mobil 1 since it was new (6500 mile oil changes tho), truck has never been abused and only has 91,000 miles on it. Whats the odds its just a little build up in the lifters and a few flushes with something and spraying some carb cleaner in the tops will cure the problem. I know the cleaning isn't the best way of doing things but he doesn't want to pull the heads. Thoughts?

Spray some Berrymans carb cleaner using the red straw down the pushrods while holding them on the lifters and then change the oil and add a quart of dextron 3 to it. Drive it for a week or so then change the oil again. Problem should be fixed before the weeks up. Maybe the same day.

Launching!
Mine started ticking the first month I owned it (02 5.3) its just the way they are
Dealer had switched many prs out on other trucks made 0 difference. Read something about the orifice hole being a little small sized. Who knows.
Switched out from Mobil1 to some (any kind) dino oil WAY quieter. Ticking doesnt hurt anything just sounds bad.

Most likely the problem is not leaky lifters but the oil system-oil filter etc leaking down when the engine sits over night. 1st thing I would try is a different brand oil filter, a good one that won't leak back. Another thing to consider is the pick up tube oil ring, cold it could be leaking air into the oil stream. This will cause noisy lifters because the air tends to go up into the lifters.
You can run the engine for a bit then shut it down and quickly check the dip stick for air bubbles. Some bubbles are ok but it could also indicate the pick up tube o ring is leaking air into the oil system.

Tick came back 2 days later as bad as ever. Did the berryman's thing and used motor flush. Drained it put new conventional oil back in with a quart of Dex III and the problems been gone for 2 days now. Gonna put a 150 miles or so on it and I'm gonna flush it again.
