Default adjusting valves!

do i need to adjust my valves when i change the cam in my car?? all my buddies that have old cars say that i have to and i was wondering if i have to and what do i adjust them to...

I assume you mean set the lash on the rockers and you're speaking about an LS1, correct? If so, then this will show you the difference in the generations. Tighten the rockers, torque them to 22 ft.lbs. and turn the motor over by hand and retorque them. That's it. No need to set lash. It's automatic. Some folks go 24 ft.lbs. but some use 22. That's all that's needed on an LS1. Just be sure the rocker is centered on the valve stem.
