I have a chance to buy rods, cam, spring and all that for 400 with an Howards cam specs 262/232 .578/.587 . Has anyone else ran this or used it? Any good?

Can't comment on that particular cam, but mine is from Howards as well, and I'm very happy with it

My cam and lifters are from Howards as well. Put over 5k on it this year since the build. all the parts seem like great quality.

A good cam for what vehicle, purpose, and supporting mods?

What LSA and advance do the cam have?

I will make power sure, a tad aggressive for something that will be daily driven in a 5.3

Especially if it's in a truck. You need something much smaller.

I guess we are supposed to assume 2001 truck?

A 2wd reg cab shortbox with 3.73 or 4.10 and maybe a stall is a different thing than a crewcab Z71 with the crap 3.42 gear.

It's a 01 Silverado 5.3 extended cab 2wd short bed with 3.73 auburn locker in it with stock converter but shift kit Transgo hd2 with longtubes 1 3/4 to 3 in all the way out. Then it's tuned too but mostly stockx

That much cam and you are going to need a high stall say 3000minimum to work right.
If your friend claims it works well in a similar application but with a 4.8l then he just doesn't know any better.

In a 5.3l that is getting aggressive and with stock gears and stall probably looking at 30mph before it wakes up.

Would an Brian Tooley Racing Truck Cam Stage III work better? The specs are 218/223 .553/.553 113+3?

I would think the 218/223 would be better, personally. And especially since you have the stock converter. I think you would like the wider LSA on the Brian tooley cam for daily driving, too.

I mean with longtubes and a great cam I should see a huge difference right?

With the stock converter, I think you will see more appreciable gains from the Brian tooley cam, longtubes or not. Don't get me wrong, the exhaust will definitely help.

Either cam should give you a noticeable difference, especially when combined with a full exhaust, but the smaller cam is a better match, in my opinion, and will provide you with a better driving vehicle.

Well that's all you need. Why even make a post about it?
