Help me build my 427 . . . details inside
Ok, I have decided on the 427 motor for my car. Will be primarily used at the track with the occasional weekend road cruise. I will be spraying at least a 200 shot and moving into a TH400 trans next month.
Speed inc will most likely do the motor, so I took the specs from their site (minus the mods I already have)
From the list below, what should I upgrade or get instead of for a reliable 427 that can handle everything I throw at it? Also, what size cam?
Anything thing to add? All comments welcome!!!
-MTI Darton resleeved block
-Billet 4.00” stroke forged crank
-Billet 6.125” connecting rods
-Diamond Custom 4.125” pistons
-Diamond Pro-select rings
-High performance bearings
-All Gaskets, seals and hardware
-Custom Comp Cams Roller camshaft
-Comp Cams Lifters
-Comp Cams chrome moly pushrods
-Double roller timing chain (already have)
-SLP blueprinted oil pump (already have)
-ASP SFI approved underdrive pulley (already have)
-RGR, MTI, Patriot, or GTP stage 3 premium cylinder heads (have stage II, can they be ported into stage 3 or should I get new heads with the motor)
-GM LS6 Intake manifold (already have)
-Fully balanced/blueprinted/Finish hone w/torque plate, assembled (wtf does this mean )
-Hooker coated or SLP headers (already have SLP)
-Offroad y-pipe (already have)
-Fidanza aluminum flywheel (will get with TH400 swap)
-Taylor 409 Race wire 10.4mm LS1 Red (already have)
-NGK spark plugs (gonna need new ones anyway)
-Hypertech 160 Powestat (already have)
-SLP, Whisper or MTI Induction lid (already have)
-SLP high flow bellows
-High flow 30# Injectors (have 42.5 already)
-Everything Professionally Installed
-Fully Professionally Dynotuned

I would get differant headers. You need at least 1 7/8" on large cube motors. You may want to consider getting and LSX intake also. If you plan to spray over a 200 shot you may want to get a set of nitrous pistons. What about head and main studs? Differant rockers? Just tossing some ideas at you.

If that were my car, I would go with the Kooks headers. I would probably use a 1 7/8th header with a 2" collector. The car should see significant gains, especially on the nitrous.
The only other real change I would make is that I would have Steve @ Race Engine Development sleeve my block. He is the co-inventor of the sleeves and the most qualified to install them. He's also an LS1Tech sponsor.

As KingCrapBox stated, I would contact Steve @ Race Engine Development. I was about to go the 427 route, but time and money kept me at 396. Anyway, he spent a good part of a Sunday on the phone with me (I didnt expect a call back until Monday morning). I know my next LS1 will be a 427 and will be sleeved by Steve!

DO NOT USE DIAMOND PISTONS WITH A RESLEEVED BLOCK. It tore up my bore and it was because of the pistons. This is from a MOST RELIABLE source. I have been down that road before. Listen to me........ or not, its your wallet.

How could the pistons tear your bore up? There are plenty of people using Diamond pistons on a re-sleeved bore and none of them seem to be having any problems? Who is your 'most reliable' source?

My SOURCE IS THE SOURCE OF SOURCES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Diamond Pistons have some sorta skirt or something that is not good for the block. I forget what EXACTLY he said. I am now in the process of getting JE pistons after my block was ruined. MeanWS6 pm me if u want to talk to me or the source. Bear

I don't understand how a piston that's used in other Darton MID blocks, that work just fine, can cause the bore to be damaged?
What exactly about the extra skirt on the Diamond pistons is causing these issues?
Not a bash or anything, just really would like to see the mechanical explanation.
Thanks man.

You guys said it, not me. I dont think Steve wants to **** off Diamond or anything, nothing wrong with the actual pistone per say, just that he doesnt recommend them for the Darton MID resleeved blocks. Thats all there is to it.
