Default How much to port my heads?

How much should I take off my heads when I port them out? What is the safe limit to cut out of them before it gets too clost to water jackets, etc? thanks, Matt

That is not the approach you want to take for best results. I wouldnt consider practiciung on your own heads if i were you, buy a junk head and get flow bench feed back from your work before attempting your own castings. There are only a couple of areas that get real thin to make your ports take off, it will only cost you a set of Ported Heads to find out!

BYBYC5 seems a little confident that he might be able to make the heads work. I will charge you $3200 and I assure you that they won't work!!

Seriously... you definitely need to look into a ported head from a well respected shop in the list of sponsors to the right... unless you really are just looking to learn?

ya well i do want to learn how, just one more think i will know how to do. i have a set of old heads off of my blown short block i can use, but i can get a regular SB head and practice on it? plus i dont have the 1000+ to spend on someone elses work, so i figured i would try it myself. just some crazy thoughts i guess , or maybe something great in the makeing.....

I did mine own.But I really just cleaned up the ports and Combustion Chamber and left the valve bowl area alone (which is where the big gains are). There are some on this board who have ported LS1 heads with good results, try doing a search.

Frank, something that ya might consider, Kendrick speed shop in san antonio offers cyllinder head flowing on a superflow bench and only charges 50 bucks to do it. cant beat it for the experience. like i said, good luck, and it can definately be done.

I ported and polished my own heads with good results. Check sig.
On the intake, be careful how much you take out. Focus on the bowls and around the valve stem to remove the extra material.
On the exhaust, I made mine look like the LS6 heads, D shaped exhaust port.
If you would like, I can send you some pics.

There are a lot of people that warn you to be careful and to just let the professionals do it, but I also wanted to learn like you. Here is the total amount I spent:

Pair of Used Heads $220
Machine work and 4 angle valve job $130
Titanium Retainers and Manley springs $190

Total ------------------------------> $ 540
