Default Road Racing Cam?

I am building up my 2000 WS6 for road racing, and need some help choosing a cam. First, when the new cam goes in, I will have done pretty much everything but touch the short block, and I don't plan on touching the heads for a while. Right now it has a whisper lid, and a Granatelli MAF. By the time I put in the new cam I will have put on QTP LT headers into a custom true dual exhaust with x-pipe(haven’t decided on 2 1/2 inch or 3 inch yet), LS6 intake(unless something better comes out), ported TB, and all the tricks for the cam(new valve springs & retainers, rocker arms, pushrods, lifters), and a tune to make everything run smoothly, am I missing anything? Here’s the trick though, its a road racer, so I need a pretty large and flat power band, from 2500-6500(preferably 1500-6500), I am willing to take a loss in total power to achieve this. Also, since I will average 20-30 minutes on the track, I need a very reliable setup that can turn 4500+ RPM's all day, and hit 6500 many many times. I'm fairly new to the LS1 game, so all help is appreciated! Thanks in advance.

The cam is not really the "reliable" part that you have to worry about, other than ramp rates and lift vs duration. I would look into some rod bolts as well, because a few people are losing them at high RPMs, and extended duty is an increased risk.

Without reading your book there, I'm going to say if you want a road racing cam you'll want something that has good low and mid range power. For that you'll want something with a higher LSA. Try the LPE cam from Lingenfelter. Has an LSA of 118.5 if I'm not mistaken but has a high lift.

Hehe, book eh? Well, here’s the short version. Mods: Lid, MAF, TB, LS6 intake, LT headers, custom true dual exhaust, dyno tune. What cam will make a solid powerband from 1500-6500 rpms, I am willing to sacrifice peak numbers to get a better powerband.

EDIT: P.S. The car is a M6, so idle quality isn't a big issue.

OK here's the cam you want: Comp XR273HR, 220/224 .530/.534 112 LSA. Powerband: 1600 to 6600.

Are you looking for track events or autox?

I am interested too. Lots of drag racing tech but not many of us road racers Midrange is everything on a road course. I'd like peak power at 6k to 6,300 with a slow drop off. 3k to 6k is were you want the power with tq. to pull off the turns.

I was thinking TR224 or maybe an ASA cam with a little more lift to take advantage of head flow 560? range, heard the midrange was great and I love the idle. How long would LG's G5X-1 live with CC987 springs out on open track events? Just a few thoughts. TTT

editied since I can't spell

I’m no road racer but I don’t think that a wide power band is the right idea. With a stock bottom, 3000 to 6000 seems more like it to me. Forget about pulling from 1500 with an LS1. You should post this question in the Road Racing section.

I'd contact LG Motorsports ------>
He seems to have the most Trans Am type racing experience.

Also Katechengines.com They build the C5R engines.
