Well, I'm using a pair of 5/16 rods to hold the lifters up, but with the rods all the way in I still have up and down movement of a few lifters as I spin the camshaft. Is this normal, or should all of the lifters be immovable? I'm thinking a little movement is probably allright, but I wanted to be sure before I dropped a few into the oil pan...

If the rods are in, the cam should not be touching the lifters, as they are sitting on the rod. If you were able to stick the rods all the way in you should be ok.
