Default Boring the stock block, is it possible?

I have a cracked piston ring on cylinder 4 and have to pull the motor to replace all my rings, and to check the block. If the block is indeed scratched/cracked, I wanted to bore out the block and buy a whole new rotating assembly to have a 383 stroker.

I recently was told that on my stock block ('98) that I can only bore/mill 0.005" on each cylinder, giving me a whopping 1 more cubic inch or so.

I guess my questions is, has this ever been done before, or should I just buy an iron block and bore it out to a 383 size or bigger? Any opinions are greatly appreciated!

yes,the ls1 can only be bored 5 over for two cubic inches(348).the rest to make a 383 comes from the crank and rods.no need to buy an iron block unless you want to bore the hell out of it for more ci's.i would keep the ls1 and have the machine work done buy the parts and build a 383 that way. anyway you choose goodluck to ya man.

Ok awesome...seems I have more to learn about stroker motors. I guess my last question is about how much will it cost to have my stock block bored 0.005" on each cylinder? And is that all that has to be done (besides the stroker rotating assembly)? Thanks!
