Coil bind?

Coil bind?
I've got Comp 978 springs, Comp lists coil bind at 1.195". Is that the true coil bind or is there a .010" or .020" fudge factor built in? The problem is that my valve spring height might be set at 1.800" instead of 1.850". If I deduct .595", the lift of the cam I want to run, from the 1.800" install height I'm now at 1.205" only .010" away from coil bind. It's my understanding you should have a minimum of .060" clearance from coil bind. What can I do to make this set up work?

well first thing to do is check the actual valve spring height. if it is set to 1.800", then there are a couple options to go with. if there are shims under the springs, you can remove them. if there are no shims, then getting .050" offset valve locks are your next move. or .050" offset retainers can be used. provided these parts are made. i know crane makes them for the standard SBC. now, all this is assuming that 1.850" will give you the correct seat pressure as well. last option is different springs to give you what you need.

Hey Terry, until I get the valve cover off and mike things i really won't know whats going on. Depending on what Jay did, do you offer retainers and locks that would increase the valve spring height? Or do you have a valve spring kit that would work with my 1.46" pockets? Am I correct that Jay + .100 valves, which would be the reason that I use 7.350 PR's? I will call you the first of the week.

I have retainers that will setup the 978 springs to 1.85.If a special retainer is not used with the stock length valve it takes a .100 long valve to set up the correct spring height. The retainers I have works with the factory valve. The PRC spring kit will work in your application. The springs locate on the I.D.,so it will not hurt that your spring pockets are larger.Either way, shoot me a PM if you need any help.
