Default tap for head bolt holes

Does anyone know where I can get a tap for the headbolt holes in the block? It would need to be a special long tap.

I know about and have an old head bolt ground down, but I'd rather a real tap.

The head bolt threads are rolled, so a regular tap won't work. You have to have a speacial "rolled" thread tap or you will weaken the thread by removing material. Where you would get one, I have no clue.

Western Tap made me one...was the only place I could find one. Was pretty expensive though.

how much is pretty expensive? What about the other bolt holes in the block? ANything special as far as taps go? I would like to run a thread chaser down the various holes to make sure they are clean, but am unsure if they are special like the head bolt holes are.

Default bolt threads

Timesert makes the thread former but he will not sell you one. A couple of guys broke the tool off in their blocks and then proceeded to sue him. I have used one of these tools in at least fifty blocks with no problems. These guys must have used a pipe wrench on the tool.

In any event, all is not lost. ARP now makes a thread cleaning tool for the LS1 that will not weaken the threads. Part number is: 912-0011. I don't know how long this thread cleaning tool is. You might want to ask if it is long enough without an extension.

I don't see that part number on ARP's website, must be awfully new. I emailed ARP to find out what the scoop is on this tool. I will be doing a head swap in about a month and would like this item also.

Default ARP thread cleaning tap

That tool is listed in the new 2005 catalog as a new item. Web site has probably not been updated.

ARP has a toll free number. You can call and ask if they have any in stock.

What about taking a stock bolt, cutting it across the threads the from the tip to about 2 inches in. Run that down and wouldn't that clean the threads???

This is the info I got back from ARP:

Yes that is a tap that is metric11mm X 2.00 thread pitch and is very long to go down into the block. You can purchase them though a local distributor or Jegs/Summit or Keystone. Jobber price on it is 49.84. Thanks for the inquiry

Yeah, that's how I did it; worked well. Then I installed ARP head studs to keep it form happening again.

Western tap charged me $100 shipped. But at the time it was the only place I could get
what I needed.
