Default Heads/cam w/ stock gears or cam w/ 12 bolt?

I have an F13 cam at home waiting to go in my car. The only part left is the ASP pulley I am waiting on from that GP not long ago. So it has given me time to think about other mods for my car. I was planning to get a 12 bolt with 4.10 gears in it this fall/winter and just drive my car with the stock 10 bolt for a while.

Now, I found a pretty good deal on some TEA stage 1.5 5.3L heads. It has got me wondering what to do now . It sure would be a lot easier and cheaper to do heads the same time as the cam. But would that run OK with stock gears for a while (I really cannot afford heads and a 12 bolt at the same time).

Any opinions guys? Anybody running (or have run) heads/cam with stock gears? Thanks.

depends on what you do with it... IMO, I'd get the 12 bolt. But that's only because of my experience grenading the 10 bolt ring & pinion at the track with bolt-ons only and on Nittos.

If you don't drag race, I wouldn't worry as much about it...

If it's that good of a deal on the heads, then go ahead and get them. Just don't plan on going to the track on some sticky tires with the H/C or you'll more than likely have a broken 10-bolt. If you want to rag on it at the track as soon as you get your new found power, then just skip on the heads, and buy the rear.

^^^what they said^^^

If you want to use anything other than a standard radial get the rear. If you are just going to be playing around on the street get the heads and wait on the rear.

personal opinion (and some fact)....you should be plenty fine with stock gears with the f-13...that is an awesome cam...if you plan on draggin it get the rear...however, if you are just going to be messing around like me keep the stock 10-bolt and get the heads...now if the stock gearing proves to be a pain to you for some random reason i would just buy a set of gears...they aren't all that expensive

no but they are weaker by function of gearing. higher numerically you go, weaker they get in the stock 10bolt.

my personal opinion, get the rear with the gears. i got a moser 9" with a full spool and 3.89's and my car is hella more fun to drive now that i'm not worried about snapping it. now i worry about my driveshaft!! much cheaper to replace.....

I know that they will be weaker...i have 3.73's in my 10 bolt with 100k miles on it...and making 385rwhp i'm not worried about breaking it because i don't launch it...it's all a matter of what you are going to do with the car...if you race it (launching) get the 12-bolt and save for heads...if not then get the heads...

Thanks for all the replies guys. I should have been a little more specific. I don't drag race the car with any regularity (2 or 3 times a year at most), and I would have no problem NOT taking it to the track until I get a 12 bolt.

For tires I currently have some Kuhmo street radials (Ecsta 712 if I remember right). They should easily last until I can get a 12 bolt.

With that info what do you guys think?

that car will drive much better with that cam if you have those heads on it. if thats what you mean by "will it run ok on stock gears"

when (if?) the 10 bolt breaks, you will have an EXCUSE to get a 12 bolt

you could spring for a 10 bolt cover with the stud kit and preload caps for a *little* security, they are cheap.

thats the cheapest i could find, says they are on backorder now. as far as the rest of them go, they are expensive due to the looks. the thunder racing cover looks the best IMO, its just a TA cover with thunder machined into it instead

My tires aren't to bad. They are good for the money, which is why I got them, (just like you). When they wear out I will either go with some road race 555r nittos or some BFG G-forces. My bud has some G-force on his car and they are definitely better than my Kuhmos.

Yes, I'm sure they are. I ran BFG g-force T/A KDW's all around when I first had the car and just last fall the ones up front had to go. I couldn't afford to pay nearly twice as much for them vs the kumhos. Seriously, $88 a tire!
