Default Guys with F14, whats your idle rpm set at?

I have a F14 112lsa. I think the idles set way to high and I don't like it. I have an A4 and it's at 1300rpms. I don't understand why its set so high. They also drilled my throttle body which I wasn't too happy about. The tunner said with a cam this big, anything lower and the car will die out. Hes a good tunner (sponcer speed shop) but I don't think hes tunned many futral cams if any. I don't think he knows how good these cams can act and I want to have him set it down to 900 rpms. But before I do, I want to make sure I'm not going to look like an idiot when he does it and then my car won't hold an idle. Could you guys let me know where yours is set at? Shift points would also be nice, mine are only at 6400 rpms and I thought this cam liked it up around 6800. Thanks in advance for any help.

That cam shouldn't have a problem holding a 900rpm idle. Having a 1300rpm idle is absolutly rediculous.

Yeah, thats what I thought. Maybe its time to find a new tunner. Anyone know someone good in the Chicago land area? I don't want to spend another $500 for a full dyno tune.

Well FWIW I had the idle on my pewter auto car with a TSP 225 cam set at about 675-750, and it sounded SWEET. I had NO problems with it wanting to die at idle whatsoever. When I get a cam in my black m6, F14 is what I'm shooting for right now, I don't want the idle any higher than 900. But I'll have HPTUNERS so that will be up to me I suppose. Good luck!!!

Sorry for being thick but this cam change thing is new to me and i've always wanted to ask this question but thought it likely to be too stupid a question

I've been checking out different cams and keep reading rev range say 1600 to 6800 for the FM 13 and presumed the idle would be set at 1600 and so i have been questioning the sense in changing the cam as it would not idle as low as the stock LS6 at 750 rpm and use more fuel etc. etc. Obviously i am mistaken since the FM 14 can idle at 900 rpm. So what is this range all about quoted by the manufacturers ?

Sorry for being a div
Cheers

I have the idle for my F14 set at 850 rpm. I'll probably lower it once I get the rest of the idle parameters figured out.

Don't feel bad, sometimes you have to ask to learn. The advertised rpm range is to give you an average range on where the cam makes the best power.

Thanks for the info guys. He better not give me a hard time about lowering it to 900rpms and if he lowers it and then it runs like crap, basicly his tuning skills suck.

Right. Basically I interpret as the cam making more, if not the same, power as the stock cam at the first given rpm. The second rpm would be the rpm at which the cam will not make any more power. These are just guestimates and the cam may or may not make power past the given rpm.

If you ever ride in a car with a cam like mine. and some floors it at 2000rpms. It will pull nicely, but once it hits 3000rpms there is a noticable abrupt difference in power all the way to redline. This is why my cam would probably read 3000-6500 (or possibly even 7000)

Basically you are right. Who is the sponsor that is doing the tuning. You can pm me if you wish not to post it in the thread.

Same here. I verified it with HPTuners, my stock tach is not very accurate at idle or at WOT.

My cam has very similar specs to the fm14 and I can idle at 800 no problem. It even holds 750 ok but i like the stabiliity of 800 better.

What kind of tuners can u buy to adjust your idle?Im doing mail order out of Speed Inc, and then using that ot drive down there for the dyno tune. What are some options for tuners formyself that I can do things like that. I know LS1 edit will do it, but any others?

HPTuners and EFILive are both great products.
