Default New LS1 for a 98 z28

Has any one had an LS1 installed in a late model camaro. I have a 98 z28 and I am interested in having the new LS1 put in (350 horse). Other modifications are planned later. Many of the shops I have talked to have declined the work, citing too many unknown variables. I have just recieved the LS1 installation giund from GM and if primarly referrs to older cars.

How direct is this installation, and what changes are needed. The new crate from GM performance comes with the ECM and wire harness.

My currect level of understanding is that this is close to a direct swap.

Any information will be helpful.

thanks

Not sure where you get 350hp...but this will drop right in.

SDPC Part Number: 25534322
Manufacturer: GM Performance Parts
Horsepower : 320 hp @ 5800 rpm
Torque : 330 ft lbs. @ 4400 rpm
Compression Ratio : 10.25 to 1
Block : Aluminum 6-Bolt
Crankshaft : Nodualr Iron
Heads, Chamber Size : Symetrical Port
Valves (I/E) : 2.000"/1.550"
Camshaft, Lift (I/E) : 0.500"/ 0.500" , Hydraulic roller
Dur. @ 0.050" (I/E) : 200/203 degrees
Intake : Composite Manifold with Tunned Runners

For a little extra work you can go LS6 or LS2...thats what I would do. Whats wrong with the LS1 thats in it?

I am quoting from the 2005 GM performance Catalog on the 350 horse, or at least that is the way they describe it. (LS1 5.7 Gen III PN 25534322.) I hope this is correct.

My corrent engine is at 151,000 miles, and I am looking to step up and keep my car. I was also interested in the LS2 if that little extra work is not too costly that is a better idea.

Thanks for the Info.

You could give Don Lee Auto a call. They are in CA. I don't know the cost, but they have accomplished this swap several times in the past and seems to be working well for them.

In the least it would be a good idea to talk to Tim. He is the shop owner there, and you should be able to get him on the phone to discuss transplants and additional issues.

Hope this helps, have a good one.

There is nothing to an LS1/LS6 swap..anyone can do it..even an idiot mechanic. LS2 requires some easy changes. www.rapidmotorsports.com can do everything for you...especially tuning.

I thought all 98 Z28's came with the LS1? At least mine did.

If your bottom end needs to be freshened up, I would rebuild it with a nice components or at least put in better bearings & rod bolts rather than buy a stock shortblock. You might as well put in a decent cam and ported oil pump too.

Mikey at Rapid is very good. If he's to far away, PM me. There is a performance shop in Baltimore that specializes in LSX powered cars and does good work.

They do, He just wants to spend money on a stock engine. I personally would get a forged longblock..
