4.185 bore forged pistons
Do custom pistons cost a lot more than non custom? I was quoted 1100-1200 dollars from a sponsor for a set of pistons in this size? I was planning on building a 443 motor with a resleeved block with the new larger darton sleeves by steve at race engine developement.

Pistons may be $100-300 more per set for customs. If you race, the biggest problem may be getting replacements. Given a choice, customs with your specified deck thickness, rings, compression height, and valve pockets is often the best way to go.
That said, this would be for a custom $15+k motor. For a $10k motor, you need to buy off the shelf to keep the price down. And the advantages of customs would not be obvious given the other compromises to make the lower price. Spending the money on better valve springs, valves, retainers, etc. would make more sense at a lower price point.

I paid 850 for pistons, pins, locks and ring set from JE. I believe diamond was about 100 dollars cheaper. Companies are not going to stock a piston unless it is a popular configuration.
