very sad day.....
so the shop just tore apart my block and found out that it was suffering from piston slap in the #6 and a spun bearing in the #8, the crank is also torn up, and the replacement clutch that was put in was not broken in properly and is now is in need of a new clutch ...the previous owner must have been on it like a cheap *****! they went through 1 1/2 clutches in under 75k...(i have only had the car for a month )...how can anyone beat on a car like this?!?...so ya...not a great day!

I know how you feel man, my car, stock 01 z that I bought used, was just put into the shop two weeks ago with a loud knock. Turns out I had a bent #6 rod and the clutch, although not shot, was worn. Luckily for me the warranty company, after five days of debating, finally agreed to pay for the engine. I'm out duckies for the clutch though. With all said and done, my trans. was rebuilt one year ago, my motor is being repaired and I'll have a new clutch. It's damn near a new car, the only thing left is the rear end, I'm just waiting for that to punch the clock. Hope everything works out for you, after seeing my bill I was glad the warranty guys took care of the engine!

well, first it is a 98 formy...second, i do have insurance as well but since it was caused by abuse they might not fix it....if the company decides to pay for it the rebuild will be to completely stock peramiters...but i would be fine with that...the only thing that will be improved is the clutch since i am out of pocket, i will be getting a centerforce dual friction clutch...and i think the bill as standing right now is around 4500-5k......so ya....

no....i dont have any samples...but it was a VERY loud knock(could be heard over the sterio in the cabin...) and it got louder with rpms...and as for the clutches, it could have made 85k if the f*ck didnt just put it in a nd run with no break-in....

well, it looks as though this story will have a happy ending! the insurance will cover the rebuild and the shop will have it done in 3 weeks....but now i have another delema...i have heard that you need to run the engine hard for break in to seat the rings properly, but also that a new clutch needs to be babied for a few hundred...so what do i need to do to break in both the new engine and clutch?!? input please?

First you need to know what will be done on the rebuild. Assuming all new rings and cylinders honed, then seating the rings comes into play. I wouldn't say run it hard, just don't baby it too much. So my recommendation for the first 500 miles is no hard launches, give it some good 1/2 to 3/4 throttle pulls through the gears but keep the RPM below 5000, let it run at least 30 seconds when you first start it before engaging the transmission, and be sure to vary engine speed and don't let it sit there idling.
That should do fine for break in and just go easy on engaging the clutch for whatever the clutch break in period is and you'll be good to go.

i have always run my new motors hard when seating the rings. never any problems, ever. you can get on it but not sliping the clutch or launching it. i would be easy on the clutch and do a proper break in for it so it lasts. shift slow and easy but you can run the motor like you want to to break them in. i had a box that a set of rings came in the it said: seating rings- run as will be driven and it said to go and accelerate from a stop to like 5k and repeat. be crusing at 30mph and WOT till 65mph and so fourth. just my .02

I know that feeling, the guy that I bought my car just said the clutch was hard. But It ws really messed up. I couldn't put it into gear, so I did a new clutch. Almost 900 bucks for parts and labor. This suxs when you just finished paying a butload of money for the car. As far as the motor, I do like sutterman I run them like Im trying to break them. Just let it wear in A good 50 miles. I figure if it was built right It should last more than a couple of high revs.
