Default Think I had my first experience with "Piston Slp" today....I think

Car has 63xxx miles on her and when I started up today (40-45 degrees) I heard a slight knocking from the engine. I popped the hood and it was a slight tapping/knocking coming from the engine, when it warmed up it was all gone and ran just fine.

YES....I recently changed to Mobil 1 after using Quaker State synthetic for the first 60k miles.....is that the cause? Should I switch back or stick with the Mobil 1? Not sure which grade each one was though

that's just how LS1s are...have you had your car since new? the new brand of oil shouldn't have anything to do with the piston slap. the temperature outside and the fact that it's an ls1 are to blame.

Had it since 16xxx miles, close to 3 1/2 years now. Seems like everyone loves Mobil 1 full syn so that's why I switched

Dont let it bother you. Piston slap dosent hurt anything besides your ears.
It is very common and very annoying.
Just be happy once the car warms up it goes away.

eh, depending on the various viscosity differences between oils, you can hear it more or less. If you like running Mobil 1 (I do personally) try the 0w-40 or 5w40 weights. I couldn't find the 5w40 near me, so I am using 0w-40.

As others have said, if it goes away after warm-up, you should not worry.

are you sure about that? i have never torn down an LS1 with piston slap, but my car has this problem and it is very un-nerving. sounds like the motor is going to grenade until the temp gauge hits 210.

anyway, seems that the piston banging loosely about the cylinder bore would cause excessive wear and even elongation of the bore as it bangs back and forth. i realize it doesnt occur for very long at any given time, but seems like it is hurting "something" everytime that piston bangs about the cylinder

I've actually done an oil analysis on my car that has a pretty good amount of piston slap (but goes away once warm), and there were no indications that it was causing any extra wear. My wear numbers were acutally pretty good for the kind of driving I do.

The LS1 is a fairly loose tolerance engine...they are just a little noisy. They make great power though.
