Was under the 02 WS6 today and saw this (pic)! Is it called my bell housing? connects engine to tranny? Look at the cracks!

I'm assuming you're looking at the bottom of your transmission and bellhousing. If so yes the cracks are normal, or at least they are present in all the F-bodies I've worked on, my own included.

This is me talking out of my butt, but I'm pretty sure the cracks are just a thermal type coating that is cracking, and that the underlying structure is still OK. If you rap on the transmission with your knuckle you'll see the metal's pretty strong.

ya i was thinking it was pretty thick and that the cracks were superficial. what is it called? its like the tranny shell towards the front of the car from the trans pan. Thanks man i was freaking thinking my shell/trans was gonna shatter while driving

Yeah, you will see that on any transmission for the most part. Mine is powdercoated orange and I still have that problem. Yeah, that is the Bellhousing in the picture. Zues is right. they peel right off, but it is better off left alone.

ive never noticed this on mine...but than again, mine is garage kept and isnt driven in the elements which might be what causes the coating to crack. Zeus pretty much hit the nail on the head though.

Mine is garage kept and rarely out in the rain and other elements. Still did it. I think that the heat from the transmission's friction output has something to do with it.
