ls1 vs ls6, how can you tell

Default ls1 vs ls6, how can you tell

just by looking at the two, an someone just told you that this is a ls1 an this is a ls6, how would you be able to tell he is not B.S.ing you. an how do they fit different, i know there is difference in performance but what is the difference in what it loooks like

casting numbers

LS6 casting is 168 and the heads are 243 (last 3 digits)

If it is a late block there is no way to tell as later ls1's used the ls6 block. The pistons are a little different but a hard way to tell. The crank is the same. The heads are the only way to tell externally, unless someone has changed them. If you pop the front cover and it is an 02+ LS6 the heads should be 243 castings and the cam should have 5308 on the front of it under the timing pulley.

so the ls6 has a grove in the bottom an is NOT flat at the bottom, right?

yall i think he's wantin to know the difference in the ls1/ls6 INTAKE, not the motor itself.

i dont mean to hijack the thread, but its on topic. my buddy has an 01 or 02 vette Z06(he really doesnt know anything about the car or engine) and i have a 99 Ls1. besides the heads and intake, what are the differnces between the two motors? thanks

If it's a later block there is likely very little difference. The 168 block was used on later ls1's as well as ls6's. The differences are the 243 heads the 5308 cam and the different alloy pistons.
