Default pros/cons of running a bigger cam over a 224?

I have heard a lot of things. Mainly that a tr224 can push up over 400rwhp on an a4 which is what I am wanting, but that seems to make the push for a bigger cam seem pointless. What is the reason for getting a bigger cam? What would be some reasoning not to?

With an auto you won't make 400rwhp with a 224 unless you have some good heads as well.

The reason I say you won't make 400 in an auto is because I had an 01 with a 225/225 cam and it only made 363rwhp through the 3500 stall. Sound low? Well it was the highest dynoing cam only auto at TEA to date, it didn't have a ported TB or a cutout either. This was before the move to Ohio, Aug 2nd, 2004.

It however ran high 11s with stock suspension.

Its a great cam. But if your looking to make more power up top then you need a bigger cam. I had a tr224 112 lsa and just switched to a bigger cam. 234/240 112 lsa. I'll post the differences after the tune tomorrow.

also with the bigger cam you will have to move your rpm band up into the 6400-6600 with the bigger sticks to hit peak hp compared to around 6000-6100 for a 224. and like brianws6 has said, most a4 224 ish cams are in the 360-370 range.on the same dyno he tuned his a4 224 i had my 228r m6 dynoed at only 383 rw but it ran awesome.

man i swear that 224 cam surprises alot of people. not the highest dyno number producing, but kicks a$$ at the track.

It doesnt suprise people, its a very VERY reliable cam. If I wasnt so greedy about a viscious torque curve, I would go with something smaller to make a flatter curve. I want 350rwtq at <3500rpm.

I'm honestly surprised that Carmen over @ the vette doctors allowed your buddy to leave without hitting 400....

Classic case of average power vs peak.....

Power under the curve > peak numbers IMHO

Street Lethal and uice12ufo, are you all saying the tr224 is actually better for track times?

ON TOPIC:
I have the TR224 114lsa in my car with the bolt ons in my sig. I bought the car like this and was told it made right around 400rwhp but have no proof of it. Im itching to get some heads to match the cam nicely in hopes to make at least 425rwhp.

reason for bigger cam: more HP and torque = faster assuming you don't spin

reason for 224 cam: It is pretty easy to tune to a nice daily driver, makes a big improvement over stock, can pass smog with a carefull tune.

The TR224 112 cam is a great cam. If you are mainly cruising your vert rather than taking it to the track, it is a good choice.

My cam specs are in my signature. I made 396 rwhp locked/375 unlocked thru a A4 with a 3600 Fuddle stall. Just picked it up last week and although there are a few tuning issues I need to get corrected, it's very manageable. I'll post the dyno sheet as soon as my shop sends it to me.
