Ok, now add gt40p heads, a custom cam, a dual plane intake and a 650 carb
All I am defending is the fact that 400+hp can be acheived with a 302 and basic heads
you do not need some sick *** non streetable 302 to make 400+
Bill Glidden did an engine for a guy... 308 inches, victor jr heads (ported), victor jr intake, custom hydraulic roller cam and 10:1 compression. That engine made 609hp at the flywheel

You nonchalantly replied like you just threw an E cam in a stock 5.0 and made 400rwhp, which AIN'T happening with the base engine you said you started with...Your little .499" lift cam was full of duration and secret little tricks, much more than a "normal" off the shelf .500" lift cam, without a doubt. I'd bet those little "stock" P heads were a bit more than stock Explorer heads too...but kudos to you for running the numbers back in the day...The old Pure Stock guys never admitted acid porting either, but we both know that was one of many little untold secrets to run as quick as they did...

After all now...your original reply was a bit misleading, wasn't it?

It is why I brought up the factory stock motor we dynoed . . .
It had custom forged pistons with .043" rings, 255 crank (hollowed throws), coatings everywhere, 5 angle valve job, 4.56s, and without weight bars it came in at 2800lbs . . .
Anything that wasn't clearly stated was taken to the limit along with the "factory cam".
It doesn't really matter here but joe blow shadetree mechanic isn't going to make the same power with a real stock shortblock and truly "untouched" gt40ps.
But its okay, we now know what kind of person you are
Oh and porting . . . just port around the casting lines and sandblast to perfection.

after reading it, I can see how it was misleading, but my heads were definitely not acid ported, I can't afford something like that.
TO be honest with you, we weren't expecting more than 375hp to the wheels, so when it read what it did we were all shocked. the entire combo was just right, including my car, which hooked on any track I went to on a 26/8.5 slick.
I ran 100lbs of oil pressure, it had .499 lift with a 1.5 rocker, the duration was between 260 and 270 @.050 and it was ground on a 104 lc and I installed it at 101. the valve springs had 180 on the seat and 350 open.
30 degrees total timing, locked out, it had an msd 7al-2 and hvc2 coil, 3923 spark plugs and a .050 gap on the plugs...
I don't remember exactly what the ring gap was, but the bearings were h bearings.
stock pistons, stock crank, stock block, stock rods with arp rod bolts.
I had $3500 in the engine from carb to pan.
the cam was the heart of the engine along with the valve springs
that was everything, if anyone wants to know more about it, I will give me any details they want.

I may be reading this wrong, so please do correct me. Is this the picture of the car you claim to own, that runs 11.50s with a 302? That car as pictured had a 408 running 11.50s It seems strange dropping in a well built engine with over 100 more cubic inches doesn't do much better.

Here are some more pics of it
In Vegas
At home
Why did I take the other engine out? I was asked to do a magazine shoot for Car Craft and was on the cover of the July2002 issue, so I happily took my engine out and put the car craft engine in. And no it didn't just run 11.50's, it ran a 10.89@125 @7000ft elevation
It ran 11.50's that day because the tune-up was completely off. We had put exhaust on the car the night before the shoot and it completely threw us off.
Later that night, after going up 10 jet sizes in the carb, it ran 10.89 at LACR.
The car/engine was not setup to run naturally aspirated. It had 355 gears, a turbo400 with a 3000stall, and the engine was setup to run on nitrous.
If I had 430 gears, a 5 speed and a different cam in that engine, it would have run bottom 10's / high 9's

the few 12:1 306's I built liked 34-36 on c10 fuel
even the 408 we had in the car loved 30 degrees.. pump gas motor too.
Now my 14:1 377 loved 36 total and 26 on a 200 shot.
