What cam can I run with the stock converter?
I don't want a wild cam, just something to wake up the car up from idle to 5000 rpm. I usually don't rev to high, it a A4 obviously. I don't want to get a 3000+ converter and drop another $500 bucks. This car is just a weekend toy/ cruiser that never sees the strip. what duration cam is good for my stock converter? not looking to set speed records etc.

Stalls make the car a pig to drive, unless you spend the cash... a gm hot cam or 03 zo6 cam would be a good choice.

yeah dont listen to 99nmb. stalls arent anyhting bad. they will give you bigger gains that a cam. if you have a good tuner depending on the stall you might not even really notice its there until you floor it

TR220 or TSP220.... on a 112 LSA.... an LS1 with stock converter could handle it... and they can be picked up in the classifieds both here and on performancetrucks.net fairly often... but if you want something to make your car noticeably more responsive and fun to drive... get a converter first, my truck with stock cam and 3200 PI stall was a blast... and then along came the cam...

Any cam will work with the stock converter. The point is that you won't be able to use the engine effectively with the stock converter, compared to a higher stall converter. I say do whatever you can get done first, but be sure you do both.
I'm sure that had you posted this up in the automatic transmission section, a lot of guys would be telling you that you better put a cam in the engine if you go with a converter. The feedback you get to a question like this is very sensitive to the context.

For the original poster, I'd recommend a Yank SS3200 (very tight), 3.42 gear, and a TSP 224 (based on the XE-R lobes) on a 112 LSA. The overlap is minimal, so when combined with that Stall/gear combo, it'll work very well. The converter doesn't hit as hard as others, so you can run street tires with it, which is a big plus if you aren't looking for a strip car. And the RPM band isn't insane with that cam. (Remember, 6k+ revs kill the auto tranny, even moreso than pure torque, because of the friction/heat).
When tuned, it'll drive like stock and crush a stock A4 from any race - roll or from a dig.

My Car is not really a pig with the stall, and it is untuned. But it is not the greatest around town to drive daily. The only thing I don't like about a stalled car untuned is when it shifts at low speeds. Its almost as the tranny is stuck between two gears and it falls on its face for a short period of time, like one second, But thats at mild acceleration. If I go wide open it shifts just fine. And it seems when running around the 40 mph zone, it won't lock up. It stays at around 2600 rpm. But If I go past 50 it will drop the rpm's and lock up. But like I said before it is untuned. Once it is tuned by the right guy it will be fine.
