Default GM piston rings

I'm in the process of "refreshing" a 99 LS1 transplant project engine. GM makes two different piston ring kits. One is standard size and one is .25 mm oversized. The cylinders are in good shape. But since I'm having head work done, I'm going to take the block and have the cylinders honed. The machine shop said they will check the bore before and after, but what is the purpose for only a .25 mm oversized ring. I guess my question is, is it for minor machine work like this.

I would say yes, those are essentially .010" oversized, which is what a hone should get you.

A cleanup hone won't even get you .005 never mind.010. To get .010 you'll be honing for days!

I have a somewhat related question in regards to this....

Can the piston rings be changed from the bottom with the heads still on the block?

How much are GM piston rings for the set? Part number for standards size pistons?

Not really. You'd have to take out the crank, and then it would also be tough to get the pistons back in the block from the bottom. It'd be easier to do it from the top.
