Curious as to what caused this?

Take the motor out and have the block checked and possibly honed. You may or may not want to get a new set of pistons. At best you can probably replace with stock pistons and go on. Now is the time to forge the motor though.

If it were me I would replace rods, rings, and pistons with forged. Keep the stock crank. You will probably be around $2,000 in repairs that route and about 1,000 with stock replacement. That is saying that there is nothing else messed up we can't see in those pictures. That happened for a reason. You need to figure out what caused it so it doesnt happen again.

I have seen complete LS1 short blocks on ebay and in the for sale section here go for less than $500, so that might be the quickest and cheapest way to go.

#7 failures happened alot to us FI guys until we started adding pvc oil catch cans. Oil from the pvc dribbles/is blown to the back of the manifold, and the last runner is #7.

How does that cause the #7 cylinder to explode? Too much detonation from the oily mixture?

It seems so. #7 going was pretty common and catch cans are now a must-have in the FI world.

I agree, that thing looks like a nuclear bomb blew up in there. The only pics of mine I have are the chunks that blew out the bottom. I should have disassembled pics soon.

Yeah, my wallet feels like it's in a vice right now. Except I just won $135 on the Hopkins vs. Wright fight!
