Solid Roller 383?
What is the advantage of a solid roller engine & what is the disadvantage of it. What needs to be done to convert to solid roller and how much more horsepower can you expect from it. Where can you get the parts to convert it.

Re: Solid Roller 383?
expensive!!! new cam 400, lifters 400, rockers 1000 (supposed to be cheaper ones out soon)
gain, probably 15 rwhp
you're gonna have to spin it to 7000+ which is a lot of wear on the engine

Oh yeh, since the lifters are solid, you need to adjust the valve lash every once in a while...
In the olden days, before adjustible lifters were invented, this was part of a normal tune up. (Yeh, I remember this well, I was a small boy, however) Obviously, this requires you to remove the valve covers to adjust the rockers....PITA
In the olden days, these tune ups were about every 15 or 20K miles... like once a year....
Since I don't like periodic valve lashing, this will not be a feature of my modern hot rod...

You don't have to spin a solid roller to make HP. My ARE 382 SR peaks at 6400, is streetable, runs on pump gas, has insane power and torque through every gear, etc. I could shove more cam than what I have in there and make even more power to some degree (I'm not sure by how much).
As far as the conversion, if you are going to make a serious solid roller you'll need the cam, solid lifters, pushrods, some serious valve springs, the heads will require work for the valve springs and the pushrod holes, a set of adjustable roller rockers (the Jesel MoHawks are way cool, that's what are on mine), you might want to have the lifter bores on the block burnished (sp?), a ported oil pump, double row timing chain wouldn't be a bad idea, new valve covers or spacers, coil relocation (it helps for the valve lashing), a bump switch (makes lashing even nicer).
It's not for the faint of heart, definitely a unique street rod. I'm thoroughly enjoying mine on the street and the strip. I need to try a road course again to complete the package!!

Re: Solid Roller 383?
Derty, I'd like to know more about your setup. What cam are you using and what power/ET's are you getting???? I'm thinking of going solid roller... actually have the lifters already and heads are being preped for it. Just need to select a cam and get rockers. any advice on cam would be appreciated.

I believe that lg motorsports has a kit coming out in a month or so. The kit will be a conversion kit to go solid roller.
It would be pretty cool to be able to shift at 7500 rpm.
