Default H/C is this Normal? Trouble staying started!

I just recently installed a 5.3 set of ported polished heads on my ls1 with a hot cam. I also installed an ls6 intake at the same time. My car has old gas...About a half tank. Sat for 6 months during the process with no stable in it. The car starts right up but wont stay running for more than 3-5 seconds. I went ahead and filled the take the rest of the way full with 93 octane fresh gas and put injector cleaner and octane booster in it. Still the car wont stay running. Starts really easily though. Is this common with a small cam? I knew larger cams had to have a tune right away in order to run right. Any ideas?

It shouldn't sounds as if something wasn't re-installed correctly. Re-check all your EFI devices to make sure they are hooked up properly or at all.

doesn't sound like the gas is your issue to me. I have seen much older gas burn just fine. Get a gauge and check the fuel pressure. Sounds like a good place to start.

Have you done any mail order tuning on that thing?

If you hold the gas pedal, will it stay running? If so, you need the idle to be tuned. Every cam requires a tune, I say. If it doesn't stay running, even while pedalling the throttle, then it sounds like the fuel pump is shutting off after a while.

i would get that thing dynotuned asap. it could even be a sensor. a jacked up sensor could cause the car to run awful. if you go to a place that's familiar with LSX cars for the tune they could probably identify if there's another issue or if the tune was all that is needed

Question. I undid the fuel line that runs thru my valve cover plate and ran a clamped hose to a gas can. I turned on the key and it starts pumping fuel then stops. Is it supposed to do this? I thought it would keep pumping until it reached a certain pressure and with it being wide open...I figured i could drain all my old gas out. what do you guys think? bad pump?

The pump only runs or primes for a short period at key on. Have you tuned the car, monitored IAC counts, and will it stay running with your foot on the gas. Sounds like you need to have it tuned.

That's ^ right; the pcm needs to see that the engine is running and there is back pressure - it's a safety thing to prevent an open fuel leak and to keep from pumping gas onto the ground, into the engine compartment etc..

A simple mechanical pressure gauge on the fuel rail is not a bad idea, expensive or hard to attach to check for correct fuel pressure.

You need to give it more base air in the base air vs coolant temp table. That cam blows a lot of air out the tailpipe compared to stock.

My car wouldn't stay running with just my cam. I'm not sure the size of your cam, but it's probably tuning. If you know anyone with hp tuners or efi live see if they can load someones file up that is similar in mods to your car and it should stay running, but will not run well. Each car is different, some will stay running and will drive ok with a h/c swap. This usually pertains to m6's. A4's need tuning.
