Default questions about lq4

motor in my 2000 ta stared knocking and looking to up grade, just found a lq4 got some questions about cam and heads selections. i know that the lq4 came form the factory with i beleive 9.5.1 compression ratio and without messing with the bottom end, what can i do to the top end to up the compression. can i go back with my stock ls1 heads and bump up the comp or what i have to go with a totally different head, if i buy the motor i will have the stock heads off the motor will they work better or what please me me know. as far as cam goes im looking to do either the 224/224 or 228/228 what kinda power would be looking at with the lq4 with either of those cams.

put a pair of ls2 heads and ls6 intake with a cam in the mid 230's and you will have some real good streetable power,425 rwhp or better,or a set of l92 heads and a l76 intake and really have some fun

As Shawn posted. The 317 heads flow similar to 243, but have large 72cc chambers, with the dish piston this equates to 9.5:1. I would either keep the 317 or swap up to 243 or better. With those cam choices, and no heads, you will see about 380-400 on an M6.

I'm sure with putting 243 heads on a LQ4 along with a .041 head gasket you should be almost up to 10.5:1 I would think it's worth it

or since they flow the same maybe u can just mill the 317 enough to bring the compression up that way...not sure if its cheaper to mill heads u already have compared to buying used 243's

Yeah but then you're dicking around with valvetrain geometry and intake manifold fitment. I got NEW 243 heads from Patriot for only $450 shipped to my doorstep.

Im not sure but you might have a lQ9, lq4 stoped i forget what year. lq4 will not need adapter harness and the lq9 will. I think the cam sensor and knock sensors move. lq9 have higher compression and 01+ have better heads i think. I bought the harness adapters from katech but didnt need them for my lq4 from a 2000 pickup. could cut you a deal on them, still new if you need them.

if you have a 2004, it has the rear cam sensor, and prob. coated skirts on the pistons-i just took one apart, was a 2004 3500 express van-also ck if it has the spacer behind the flywheel (if it has a flat flywheel) if it had a 4l80e,
you will need to use your flywheel and rem spacer

You're can if you want drill and tap for the 3rd alternator hole. I know some people who have and some who haven't. It's up to you.

Another difference with the LQ4 is that the balancer (all 4.8, 5.3 & 6.0 trucks) extends 1.25" further toward the radiator than your LS1 balancer, which you would need to swap. The truck water pumps and oil pans are also different than the LS1's. HTH
PS-If you decide to sell the truck balancer and water pump, let me know. Thanks.
