Default Newbie looking for cam help for my Z06, custom grind or off the shelf?

I just bought an 01 Z06. I'm coming from the Mustang camp and don't know a great deal about the LSX stuff yet, but I'm still doing research. The car will be a weekend street car with the rare trip to the 1/4. I'm going to do longtubes, x-pipe and I've already got a Corsa catback. I plan to keep the stock LS6 heads and LS6 intake for a while so I'm looking for a cam that will compliment the stock heads/intake. Here's the kicker, I want a pretty lopey idle if I can get away with it. I was considering the MTI X1, MS3, G5X3, or maybe the Vengeance VRX4, but after talking to my engine builder he's got me doubting the off the shelf stuff for my setup. He said that to get the idle I want without sacrificing all the bottom end power of those off the shelf cams that he could do a custom grind with a tighter lobe seperation like 108-110 and then I would have the lope without having to go big on the duration. He said he can get me a custom grind for around $400 and he's seen them pick up 45rwhp with tuning on a setup similar to mine and I wouldn't have to spin it to the moon to make power? Any info would be appreciated.

thanks

Mark

Sounds like you may want an MS4, 240ish .649 lift, 110 or 111 LSA...
If you want something nasty for all motor, thats your cam.
I gotta a guy with the LS6 PP heads Dual Valve springs and a MS4 he Dynos 402RWHP SAE... Not bad at all for Cam only....

I gotta MS3, with a 112 LSA, great for all motor and NOS, I make 460RWHP on motor and 602 on juice, I love it.
Here is a link to idle/dyno vid on my MS3...

I would think the MS4 or maybe even the MS3 would require flycutting the pistons? I want a cam that can be swapped in without pulling the intake or heads.

Cool, I guess with the MS4 you've gotta run dual springs, do they require any machine work to the heads or are the dual springs a bolt-on deal?

With your set up and a Dyno tune, you'd be putting down more than 400RWHP. What other mods do you have and what mods do you plan on getting?

did the flip-tie mod which is basically like the Callaway Honker, i'll have TPiS longtubes, offroad X-pipe and Corsa Indy catback, that's about it. I'm leaning toward the MTI X1 since I'm keeping stock heads and stock LS6 intake.

with almost any aftermarket cam you are going to have to run dual springs. i would not go with the ms4, its way too large and will have **** bottom end power.

your stock ls6 springs are only good to 570 lift cams. you must upgrade for bigger lift. (consider patriot gold 650lift) choose your cam wisely, read the sticky thread on cams. anything over tr224 will give lope and big power but you'll start to sacrifice drivability / street mannors. just my 2 cents. note, if you over build you'll have less people willing to buy your car if you need to sell someday.

What are you looking for out of your camshaft aside from a good lope? I notice in your original post you dont want to "rev to the moon" but people are suggesting an MS4 type cam... Rest assured with something that large, including our Vindicator, you wont see much of an increase until 4000rpm... There are MUCH more suitable camshafts available to you that provide more power UNDER THE CURVE and still lope extremely well.

Best of luck. If we can help, feel free to call.

I want a nice lope and a cam that will pull hard to around 6,500 or wherever the stock rev limit is.

I don't really want to turn it more than 6,500 with the stock bottom end, would you agree?

I think in my email you recommend the VRX3 or VRX4. I just want to make sure if I spend all this money to get a cam and tune that I put something in it that's big enough that I'll be happy with the sound and power. I love the way the MS3, X1, and other popular cams sound at idle.
