Re: What kind of oil should i use
My personal belief, from looking at a lot of oil analysis reports, is that the LS1 engine likes something a little bit thicker than Mobil 1. It likes an oil that is an upper 30wt to a lower 40wt.
Based on this, I suggest Amsoil 5w30 (or 10w30), Redline 5w30 (or 10w30) or Castrol's Syntec 0w30 from Germany (make sure it says from Germany on it, as this oil is actually Formula SLX, and is an extremely good oil) All of these oils are on the very upper end of the 30wt range, so they are almost 40wt oils. And then don't thin out either, all three of them stay very close to their original viscosity, even if you go with 5-6k intervals.
If you want to stick with conventional oil, Pennzoil 10w40 or Castrol GTX 10w40 are both good choices too. With these oils though, they'll thin out a little bit, so you'll want to stick with 3k intervals to be safe.
The problem with Mobil 1 is that it's too close to being a 20 weight oil, so when you drive your car hard, you don't have as much protection as you should. Especially if your oil temps are very hot (which means the oil is even thinner) If you mix in some 15w50, it helps, but one of the problems with that solution is that it then thickens up the viscosity of the oil when cold too, which can cause more engine wear once the weather isn't so super hot anymore.

Re: What kind of oil should i use
Be careful with Royal Purple. I'm running their 5w30 in my wife's car right now, and in the two oil analysis reports I've done so far it has thinned out a lot. Her wear numbers are pretty good, but Honda engines also show good numbers on 5w20 (which her 5w30 RP has turned into!) while I don't believe the LS1 would like 5w20 one bit.
Their 10w30 should be more stable, but I've seen it thin out a bit also. Use this oil with caution, and do oil analysis to see how the wear numbers look.
I'm going to try their 10w30 next in my wife's car to see if it really is more stable.

Redline 10w40 should work very well for you. I wouldn't run it in the cold winter, for that time you could switch to their 5w30 (if you drive your car in the winter that is)

Re: What kind of oil should i use
I've used Mobil 1 in my engine since the showroom floor. It now has 97,000 miles. When I installed my cam at 85,000 I could not believe how CLEAN the engine was. It is spun to 6600 rpm regularly also, original oil pump and timing set. 100 and 150 shots of TNT since around 20,000 also

I run Redline 10w40 all year long in my Modded GTP. Has performed flawlessly up to this point. I also use Redline 10w40 in my V-Twin sportbike.
The temperature in my area ranges from -20*F to 98*F.

Wow, this thread originated in 2003! It's funny to read what I wrote so long ago! I still believe now what I wrote then though. LS1s do not like M1 5w30, they like something a bit thicker.
