Default Cam choices

Have a ls1 in a 00 trans am with 60k miles that we are starting to build. Funds won't allow heads quite yet but I'd still like to put a cam in it at this time. Car is an a4 with long tubes with catless y, hooker straight through muffler, fast 92mm with nick williams 92mm tb 85mm z06 maf,slp lid, yank ss3600 stall , 3.42 gears. It has the 853 heads and im wanting to run something like the tsp torquer v2. Will a cam that size cause tuning issues or driveablity issues on stock heads?

The CAM will be easy...
The 92mm throttle body will be a good test of your tuning ability.

I plan to have it professionally tuned was just concerned a cam that size wouldn't work well with the stock heads and I'd be throwing money away.

You WILL of course install the Valve Springs recommended by Texas Speed Products ?
Those "Low-Lift" TORQUE cams, up into the 212/218 duration, .551" WILL start up on a factory tune, and will need minor base running airflow adjustments with the OEM throttle body...
The addition of an after market throttle body changes EVERYTHING.
You say you are having " A Professional" tuner involved, so your golden. Nothing to worry about.

Yes will order as a "kit" with dual valve springs, ti retainers, push rods, che trunnion upgrade , new timing chain and melling oil pump and ls7 lifters and new trays.I plan to have mail order tuner send me something on hp tuners good enough to get me on the trailer and to a local shop to get it dyno tuned properly.

With a 3600 stall I would look hard at the Cam Motion
LS1 Titan 4 227*/232* 113*+4* .612"/.595"
This will work excellent with your current heads, and
Ported OE, or aftermarket cathedrals when/if you
need/want more.

I agree. A 3,600 stall converter opens the door to a lot of more aggressive cam choices.

Most cam's in the 23x duration range ideally need, more compression, bigger stall (4000+), 72-7400rpm shift points. For a fun streetcar that retains stock heads, stock compression, with <7000 rpm shift points, I would look at the 228r or something in that realm. Even at that a LS1 still makes great average power with even smaller cams in the low 220 range. It will drive nicer down low and feel more responsive with a cam in the 220-228 range as well. The Nick Williams 92 isn't that bad for tuning. the 102mm stuff is much more of a PITA. jm2c

I am intrigued by the Michigan Motorsports Stage 2 Drift cam. Its 225/229@.050, 111lsa, .629/.600 lift. Stage 3 version might work ok with a 3600 stall though if you want it even spicier.

Or you could call up Cam Motion and get a custom grind for $400, not a bad deal!

The V2 is a great cam. On another get some 243/799 heads and send them off to a good porter or to get a cnc job that you can afford. Factory catherdrals can make power. My car just put down 480 to the tire on home ported 799s combined with a cam motion camshaft.

I'd look at the TSP Bald Eagle NA Cam. it has a hair less intake duration and the lsa is on a 111. Either would work fine with your stock heads. Bigger isn't always better.
