Default Some questions on Performance Crate Motors....???

Hey guys,

Figured this would be a good place to ask this question. I am considering adding a bit more power to my 68 RS Ragtop and I would like some advice. There seems to be a huge disparity in price between a block built by a good engine builder and a more modern fuel injected motor like a worked LS1.

What are the big differences in price?
Aluminum vs. Iron?
Fuel injection vs. carbeuration?
Big block vs. Small Block?

I mean check out the following prices and let me know what I am missing here:

ZZ4 Crate motor for $3600 - Good performance, good price
www.gmpartsdepot.com/stor...uct_ID=962

Fuel injected 502 for $8,000 - Big performance, good price
www.gmpartsdepot.com/stor...uct_ID=966

And then there are these things? Why the huge jump in cost?

More Performance 427 LS6 - $28k!!!
www.moreperformanceinc.co...6_race.htm

454 ZL1 - $20k!!
www.gmpartsdepot.com/stor...uct_ID=988

So my question is why the huge jump in price for not even that much more power? Is it reliability? Components?

Thanks for your advice,

Dan

Well the More Performance engine listed is hand built with lot's of customized parts and not a factory spec crate motor like the ZZ4 or the 502. The extra assembly time and extra machine work, combined with higher priced parts, high labor rates and extensive research all combine to make the MORE 427 cost what it does.

As for the ZL1 454 it's limited production etc and their are people that will pay the price for the prestige, ego trip whatever.

Ditto that. Are you looking to go big block or small? If it was mine, I'd save up for the ZZ 572.
