Default to coat the pistons or not

Is coating the top and sides of the pistons worth it?

sides YES, top depends on application IMO.

why yes to sides? but application on top when is it good when is it not?

Skirt coating to cut down on cylinder wall scuffing/friction and making for BETTER ring seal. Application to the top is good for N20/blower/turbo applications IMO.
