Pop off the oil pan and measure the crank shaft, that is the only way I know of to be 100% sure. The 5.3 and 4.8 used the same block casting and head casting numbers so it is hard to tell. Also, the displacement stamp that is on the 6.0 and 5.7 isn't stamped on the 5.3 and 4.8 motors. As far as i know.
Hope that helps

What ever I end up doing its going in a 85 cutlass. I had thought about a FI setup with the truck manifolds but I have to have ac, and I dont want to be 20 k deep into it. Ill probably end up buying something else, trying to keep this on a budget

You can make it into a 5.7L pretty easily. 3.622 crank, matching rods with cylinders bored to match LS1 pistons. That would be a fairly cheap considering you already have the core 4.8L.

Ok budget is a relative term, I know Im not gonna get it done for 2k but Im trying to be somewhat frugal.
Im leaning towards the iron ls1 idea, with a forged rotating assembly I could make good power with a 150-200 shot.
heres a couple pics of the beast waiting for its transplant.

I'm doing a iron LS1 out of a 4.8 right now. So I vote for that. If on a budget, just get someones used takeouts for cheap. I'm using the internals leftover from my forged 383 in mine.
