When I put my motor back together I didn't use one. I haven't had any problems with it

What he said. I've had my engine apart twice in the last 2,000miles and i replaced the gasket and seal the first time and reused the gasket and seal the second time around no problems.

I thought I might be alright with out it. I read a few things were people did not use it. They carefully lined up the Rr cover and pan then tighten it down. I may try this...

what you want to do is have all the rear cover bolts in finger tight, then torque down the two long bolts that go through the oil pan...then torque the cover bolts...

If anything just use a straight edge to help make sure the pan is flush with the back of the block. If the pan is flush the rear cover will align properly. The rear seal is pretty much self aligning to the crank is the rear cover fits flat to the block.
