Yea how many miles are on the pump thats on there now? There are several sponsors that sell ported high volume pumps and they are not that much money. Did my H/C/I swap with 82K on the motor and replaced my pump. When you look at the amount of money your putting into the motor spending a hundred to two hundred extra for something as crucial as that is just great insurance. And when your doing the cam swap the pump is right there. Wont take to much longer to do it.

If your engine has only 3,500 miles on it, your pump is still practically brand new . If it were my engine and the oil pressure is good I would not bother changing it .

i have been trying to decide if i want to do an oil pump when i do my h/c swap this winter. i see alot of people saying to do it while your in there cause its right there, but has anyone ever had their stock one give them issues. i am just curious why its so popular to change the oil pump out. is it mostly for the warm fuzzy feeling of the pump being new, or are there real cases of stock oil pump failure/inadequacies.

There have been many cases of oil pumps crapping out on people. Depends on how many miles and what year motor. I think the 98's had issues with the pump.

Most people who change their oil pumps either have a 1997 thru mid 2000 car where there was a issue with the oil pumps failing prematurely due to the bypass valve sticking and causing low or no oil pressure, or they have alot of miles on them and it makes sense to change them while they are inside the timing cover anyway . Your car is a 2001 with 3,500 miles on it so I really don't see the point in changing it but if it makes you feel better by all means replace it . If you replace it make sure you don't pinch the o-ring on the pick-up tube, if you do ,you will not have good oil pressure and you will have to take it apart to fix it .
