Default NGK 555 vs NGK TR55

Everyone talks about the NGK brand spark plugs. I actually bought a set the other day from the ws6store.com with a set of MSD wires. My question is, what is the difference between NGK 555 and NGK TR55? Those are the most common two that I have seen that will work for my application (low bolt ons, no FI or spray). Is there any major difference?

I ended up going with the ngk TR55's since it was either those or tr6's and I've heard those work better for FI or more power. But my next question is that the ws6store says they are pre-gapped at .060, will this gap work for a DD or will I need a lower gap?

NGK TR5 and TR55 are stock heat ranges for bolt-on, cam only and H/C setups. Best gapped at .040-.045. Stock LS1/LS6 - TR55 gapped at .055
TR6 is 1 step colder for FI and Nitrous setups. best gapped at anything .039 and under.

You may need to gap them differently because the MSD wires have a lower ohms resistance and will fire across the gap faster. This little adjustment can wreak havoc on your system with misfires codes etc. I know from experience.

Well, I got the TR55's in the mail yesterday and checked the gap on them. All are set to .055. I have little to no mods at the moment so would gapping down to .040-.045 be best for me?

NGK has these two different plugs of the same heat range is because it's recommended that you only change the preset gap of a plug by plus or minus .010. So if you plan on running a gap of between .029 to .049 then you would run the TR5, if you plan on running a gap of .049 to .069 then you would run the TR55.

Leave them .055" and you'll be set! .040" is just too tight for an NA, relatively low compression LSx engine!

Any spark issues with a LS1/LS6, H/C 450+rwhp w/ 10.5-11.5 compression with plugs gapped at .055?

I'm one of those guys that think plugs should be changed every 15,000 miles....its too cheap and easy not to.

For the first 4 years when my 1998 WS6 was 100% bone stock......I tried gaps from the stock .060, to .055 to .050 down to .040....ABSOLUTELY ZERO difference in performance OR gas mileage. My odometer when my tanks would reach "EMPTY" were the same every time.

My 427ci went in in 2002....I tried them all again. ZERO DIFFERENCE once again.

So......for bone stock, bolt-on, H/C or big stroker engine making 650 RWHP.......as long as they are N/A...... gap them to .050 Thats right in the middle of all those gaps that work perfectly.
