Default LS3 Crate Motor Searching for 500 to the tires.

Im building a 69 Camaro right now and have ordered a t56 Magnum, all the accessories, and a zr1 clutch setup.

I am looking to do 95% of my driving on the street and maybe a trip to the track once or twice both autocross and drag.

I really want to make 500hp to the wheels. I want the car to have that lumpy muscle car sound, but I want it to be friendly and drivable on the street. I would like to avoid as much surging and low RPM problems as possible. Also would like to have enough low end to have fun light to light. Having 500hp is great but if the usable power is only above 5500 rpm thats no good for the street.

Here is what I'm wanting.

LS3 Crate Motor
Nice Cam and Valvetrain upgrade(with stock heads)

I would also be interested in using a manifold such as the holley hi ram.

Are stock injectors and throttle body going to be ok for a setup like this? Anyone have a cam recommendation?

Man, that's a tall order! I don't see that happening with your requirements on drive ability, short of forced induction. If you don't have to have that dyno sheet showing 500RWHP, you can surely get in the mid 400s and get the manners you are looking for. It doesn't take a bunch of cam to get that kind of power from a stock headed LS3, and I don't think you will get good lowend power with more than something in the high 220s on intake duration. My 220 at .050 cam does fantastic and has power everywhere. I would guess Im in the low 400RWHP range , maybe as high as 430, But the TQ is everywhere from 2k up to 7K without dropping off anywhere.

Yeah I figured as much. I know I see a lot of talk about a LG cam that makes 500 on stock cars with headers and such. I don't need the dyno sheet to prove it.

450 to the ground would be satisfactory, i just really want the right sound.

Also, is a HI RAM intake going to hurt me? Really like it for the look.

You CAN make 500RWHP with a stock block LS3, just not with your other requirements. It only 376 CID and will have to turn the RPMs to the 600FWHP. Now if you want to stroke it to a 416, the cam timing cam be much milder to get the HP you want. You are going to hear a bunch of people saying you can make the number, but it will come at a cost. Either drive ability or your billfold for a stroker setup. The Hi Ram is suppose to work good down low according to Holley, but the only tests Ive seen on it has to get the RPMs up before it cleared it throat and started singing. You might want to consider a carbed intake setup, but with a TB and port EFI. The dual plane GMPP intake makes fantastic TQ on a 376 and has injector bosses cast in. If you want the "look" the Vic Jr is a very nice intake and martin at Tick can hook you up with a cam that will have the sound AND make great power. Just make sure he knows what you expect out of the engine. Good luck!

I've been testing and designing a new LS3 Polluter cam for a while now. Its specs and the cam itself will be released very soon.

Some of the preliminary dyno graphs from some of the cam only cars we tested it in:

We have tested this cam with LG headers, ARH headers, TSP and Kooks headers. Different cat-back exhausts and different cold air intakes. All testing was done "cam only". Have not put this cam with aftermarket heads yet, but will be soon with a set of CNC ported LS3 castings on a 6.0 motor.

This cam in all 6 cars it was tested in, the lowest numbers were 484/445. Highest was 500/454. Average power numbers were in the 488-492/448-452 range.

Not all of the cars were run on the same dyno, but the same dyno was used for 3 of the 6 tests.

Hope this helps.

Are those numbers above on an engine dyno or chassis? You say they were tested in cars so I assume those numbers are rwhp.

I like the look of the graph. Those

Would love to hear some idle videos when available.

Those numbers look good for what I'm wanting to do with the car. I would like a choppy idle though.

Sounds great.

Looking for a car that will be nice to drive around town and also in 6th gear on the highway be nice.

The calculator says my car at 1800 rpm should be 70mph in 6th.

With this cam and a good tune as long as you don't try and load it up at or under 1500rpm you will be fine.

There are any number of people getting over 500rwhp with the new Camaros and a M6 transmission. Just have to follow the recipe. Doing it with an A6 transmission is another matter. Very, very few are getting 500rwhp with an A6. I am sure Martin @ Tick could get it done for you.

Anyone have any input on a Holley Hi Ram. Interested in it purely for looks. Just don't want to lose the low end.

I have a cammed LS3 crate engine in our 2001 Monaro.

Car weighs 3,880lbs and has run as quick as 11.16 and fast as 121.5mph.
This calculates out to a best of 565 horse power at the engine.

Dyno reading is only 428rwhp on DynoJet 248c.
