Default Anyone install motor from top with heads on?

I need to know where you guys hooked the hoist chain up to. When I removed the old block I had the heads off already so that was easy. However, going back in the heads will already be on and I was looking for a safe, secure place to bolt the chain on. I tried a search but mostly got info on istalls from the bottom. Are the bolt holes in the heads alright to use? If not what have you guys been doing? Thanks for the help.

QTP has a lifting plate that bolts to the block where your valley cover goes. Works like a charm!

I have done it a couple times and about to do it again. I always use a leveler, hooked the chain at opposite corners of the manifold. With a composite manifold, this would prove troublesome as you might bust the manifold.

Where are you hooking the chain up at? Is there enough room to go behind the head on one side??

Not only enough room but is it strong enough to lift all out by bolting chain to cylinder head?? Good question as I have wondered this as well.

I'm going with the Happy Hooker. As suggested from TPIS. Looks like a pretty nice tool. So I guess my question might be directed more towards them, if they have done it or not.

Tried it tonight and I don't recommend it! We got it out but damn! All the other times I had taken extra time to get the trans off first. It was an LT1 so you might an easier time with the smaller LS motor. You run out of room in the front real quick. If you wanna try it, take the motor mounts off cuz your trans will hook on them. Also remove both dipsticks to avoid bending/crushing. I really wish I had taken the trans off this time. Oh yeah, you'll run out of room on the cowl too. We bent mine some but should be alright cuz the plastic will cover it over. I'll try installation through the bottom this time. I'll just have to drain the brakes and turn a few bolts on the shock towers and the K member.

Got my iron block motor and trans out with factory accessory bolts and I believe a ?grade 5? that was laying there. Didn't even bend em.

Single chain, no leveler, bolted to front of driver's side head and rear of passenger head accessory holes. Pulled the engine and trans together (without crank pulley), then installed them the same way. Just make sure you are using a bolt that doesn't bottom out before it squeezes the chain. You want to have good clamp load on the chain and it'll be fine. Having the nose of the car up pretty high and one guy underneath guiding the tailshaft on a floor jack helps. Without the trans, it should be a piece of cake.
