Im using my Stock Ls1 Windtray and Windtray bolts , but i have a little problem going on. I was told to use 2 - .040 thick washers by 5/16 hole , well i tightened the windtray bolts up and when i spin the engine , the Rod bolts Scrape the Windtray , how can i go about solving this problem ?

i used like 3 washers i think but i cut my pickup tube and rewelded it just incase it sat too low, i checked it with clay and had perfect clearence

i cut it with a hack saw and then just rewelded it so i didnt take much off of it

I use 2-3 washers depending on clearance, and for the pickup tube you can push it down once bolted in. Make it clear without the pan gasket then when you install the pan with the gasket you will have even more clearance.

FYI - I tried something a little different when I recently freshened up my motor. This method require more time, but allows the windage tray to be bolted in place without shims so no bending of the oil pump tube is needed. This keeps the pickup in the stock position.

* Slowly hand rotate the engine at least to complete revolutions with the windage tray bolted in place (no shims). The rod bolts will barely nick the underside of the windage tray.
* Unbolt and remove the windage tray.
* Mark the nicks with a permanent marker (Sharpie works good).
* Take a hammer and dull, flat chisel and tap the marked areas to create slight notches or depressions where the nicks were.
* In addition, I took a die grinder to the "depressions" to smooth them for additional clearance. Not a whole lot is needed here.
* Reinstall the windage tray, slowly hand rotate the engine and check for clearance.

It's easier than it sounds and once again doesn't require a whole lot of work to clearance the rod bolts; just patience. Just make sure you verify clearance for all rod bolts.

BTW - I didn't come up with this procedure, I just added a couple of steps.

Here's a pic for clarification. This is the underside after it was clearanced. Make sure to clean with brake cleaner and compressed air.

That's some good info! I take it this is for any 4" stroke as I am about to go through installing a 408 LQ9?

i wussed out and just ordered the slp spacers, they are like $10.00 with these the pick up tube will still have enough clearance, i sure as hell hope so, and i have no rod bolts hitting the tray.

I didn't install the Windage Tray at all.. these Engines have the Crank so high up in the block it doesn't affect the Oil in the Pan at all.. it's not like a Gen I or a Gen II..

I haven't had any problems, and it probably helps out the flow-back really good.

Question From bottom of Pick up tube to the bottom of the Pan Clearance ?

What kinda clearance should i have From the Bottom of the Oil pan to the bottom of the oil pickup tube ?

I clayed it .. without an oil pan Gasket i have a 1/4 inch to about about 5/16"

When i glayed it with the Oil Pan Gasket i had Anywhere from 3/8" to 1/2" is this ok ? But another thing , when i glayed it , it seemed like one side of the tube was turned down toward the bottom of the pan more then the other side .. thats why it was like a 1/4 to 5/16 and 3/8 to 1/2 .. just wonder if this is going to be safe Numbers for my TSP 402cid Stroker Engine ?

Gonna bump this up again if anyone can confirm what a safe clearance is for the oil pickup tube to the bottom of the oil pan.

I just clayed mine with the oil pan gasket on (didnt torque it down tho) and I got just over 6mm. Which if I am not mistaken is about 1/4 inch. I also tried putting the pan on with no gasket (but didnt clay) and it cleared fine.

The generally accepted range for pick-up to pan clearance is .25-.50".

Thanks for the reply Matt. I used 3 washers but I grinded out the hole on the pickup tube bracket that bolts to the main cap and fastened it with a nut. I will double clay it again to make sure and then the pan will stay on for good.
