Default F'ed up optispark on rebuild

When i was tearing down my motor (like a dumb ****) i took off the opti and was tinkering around. i left and come back about a half hour later and turned the engine a couple times before i marked where it was on the opti. it wasnt at tdc when i took the opti off either.
How will i put it back together when i dont know where it was at? Ive never messed with the stupid opti before and i completely made a goober rookie mistake that never should have happened.

Vented or Non-Vented. Curious and I am sure it has some bearing. I have been chasing my own opti problems and would be curious to hear something on this one.

94. i dont think its vented. its been a while since ive been on here so ive forgotten a little bit. like i said, i just need to know where to set the opti, if the motor is at tdc. that would be the easiest way to figure it out. thanks

On a non vented opti, the splined shaft can only go in one way easily. line up the key with the key in the top timing gear. then turn the opti till it lines up. it will take a few trys to get it. it should slide in smooth. don't force it. you'll be fine.
Hope this helps.

Same thing I was going to say, there is a Key-way on it. '95 and up factory stock have the Dowell Pin.

93/94 are easy to line up wrong. Make sure that "key" is positioned correctly.
If you do it right, it will pop right in with virtually zero force.
If you line it up wrong, it will still go in with very little effort.

The best way to understand what I am saying is to pull the shaft out of the opti
and put it in a few times. You'll immediately feel how efortlessly it should go in when lined up correctly
and how easy it can be to line it up wrong.

I can't tell you how many times I've seen this done.
People usually don't figure out they screwed up until they have everything buttoned up and try to start the car.

Thats what i was worried about. I have the engine out, i might as well figure it out now, bc taking it off while assembled is not the easiest of chores. Anyways, i think ive got it now and thanks again for everyones help.

I though I had it on wrong one time, tore it all down and double checked it, and it ended up being the Rockers too tight, causing only a few Cylinders to fire..
Talk about a kick in the *****..
