Valve Spring Dilema
well i wanted to liven up my 150k mile Lt1 with new valve springs, rockers, pushrods and guideplates. i did my research and found that the crane 10308 springs would be perfect. i ordered them in early november and theyve been on back order till yesterday. but now there in backorder itll decenber! i want to do it soon before the winter comes in. ive read whatever i could find out the comp 918's and was just wanting to make sure of theyd require any machining of the heads. and also if someone could tell me what retainers and locks id need for my stock lt1 thanks!

those parts will have them set up WAY too short (1.680" or so).
I would get the PAC 1218 or Comp 26918 springs and these parts.
Comp 795-16 locators
Comp 611-16 locks
Comp 4705-16 locators
This will get you real close to the 1.750" set up ht you need.

will the comp beehives at 313 PS/I be enough for a CC503 cam?
or would you get the dual cranes # 10308-1. they are rated at 408 p/i.
the springs in the hot cam kit are rated at 322 p/i arent they?

Hot Cam springs are about 100 lbs seat and 275 lbs open.
These will not work any other aftermarket cam. Not enough seat presure, open pressure or travel before coil bind (coil bind at .540 lift). Hot Cam has slow and lazy lobes that can get away with this low amount of pressure and somehow work being that clsoe to coil bind (.525 lift and .540 coil bind) but the typical hy roller cam will NEED 130 lbs on seat, 325 lbs open and .040 coil bind clearance. and be better off with a lil more pressure.
The bee hives are a lil different and are able to work with less pressure and be as effective as a stronger spring due to there design so you can actually get away with less pressure. The Comp 26918 or PAC 1218 bee hives set up at 1.750 will handle the CC 503 with NO PROBLEMS.
The Crane springs are heavier and use bigger, heavier retainers so you will need more pressure from these springs to control the valves as well as the bee hive does with less pressure. Luckily, this spring does have enough pressure (and then some) to keep the valve trane stable with the extra weight.
There are other parts you can use to get to make the Crane springs work. I'll send you a PM with part #'s and where to buy.

awesome info thanks a bunch
I was just piecing stuff together on summit. I am not gonna do a cam for a while. I need intkae side, then 3.73's stall, and rear suspension first.
cam hopefully within 2 years. I like to plan ahead, and get things set. I wanna go as fast as possible on stock heads.....with the usage of nitrous, and 503 cam

yea i will be happy with that... and it will be good for a cam down the road if you get one... thats the same springs retainers and valve locks i have on my car and im very happy with them... if you have the money i would also get some pushrods... i also got pushrods lifters and 1.6 rockers with my car with my cam....

thanks, i wanna go with the mag roller tips (have a pretty tight budget) and 7.500" hardened pushrods if thats the right length if i remember correctly. i just have to figure out which guide plates and studs to use that wont require machining because i dont want to pull the heads off the car anytime soon

I'm in the same dilemma. I wanted to get the Crane kit, since it came with everything I needed to do my 1.7RR install. But, since no one has it in stock, I have no idea what to do. I'm clueless on what parts to use piecing it together, and it seems like it'd be a lot more money buying everything separately.

Yeah, I'll probably end up doing that. First, I'm trying to figure out if Scoggin Dickey has the Crane kit in stock. It doesn't say they're out of stock on their site, so I emailed them. If they have it, I'll end up doing that. Because, with the Comp parts that Lloyd listed, it comes out to about twice what the Crane kit costs.
