I asked for a site so I know that I am not going to down load crap and end up with more problems then have developed in the few days since ditching Norton.

You just need to know what, and what not to click on. I havn't used anti-virus protection for the past 5 years.
They only way you can get malware is because:
1. Someone targetted you and planted it there (either over the internet or in person)
2. You were tricked into clicking/downloading directly/indirectly to a malicious host.
That being said, just be carefull what websites you go to. I believe the 2 most popular ways people inadvertantly infect their computer is through p2p sharing apps (Kazaa, limewire, etc...), or because they click links to other websites, THROUGH other websites...

I personally switched to Avast when AVG 8.0 came out. AVG had a great product but just like Norton & McAfee when they got away from what they did best (Anti-Virus) and added all the other anti-spam, anti-malware, firewall BS the product became too resource intensive for my taste. Avast is just an anti-virus. I have other tools that are better than AVG for the other features. Just my .02

I get worried as **** if my GF ever borrows my laptop though because god knows what will end up on here.
If I did eventually put one on it would be NOD32.

I'd guess not with a quad core. What I should have said is version 8 is more resource intensive than 7.5 I had no luck with version 8.0 on several machines. Still looks like you have something going on. The memory usage seems a little high for an idle XP machine.
