3.73 or 4.10
Looking to put a new rear end gear in my car the 2.73 is just not doing it anymore need some help deciding between a 3.73 or a 4.10. I was wondering the diffrence in the rpms between the two on the highway and also the pro and cons of each setup I'm going to be keeping the stock ten bolt but with a strong rear end plate thanks for the help in advance.

Since you have an A4 id go with 3.73s for the simple fact that they are stronger than 4.10s because of the pinion gear size. I have 3.73s in my A4 and I love em. Just be prepared to do some messin with your shift points to get it just right.

I wouldnt recomend the 4.11's in the stock 10 bolt...they will break loads quicker. the teeth on the 4.11 gears are much smaller and will break a lot easier on in the 10 bolt cause the pinion gear and all is so much smaller in the 10 bolt. I have the 12 bolt with 4.11's and I love'm. theres my $.02. Laterz Justin

Re: 3.73 or 4.10
I'm thinking that the 3.73 is souding alot safer with a ten bolt. I know that most of you posting have 4.10's but has anyone hear anything good or bad about the 3.90's. I mean thats soounds like the best of both world right?

What do you wan to run on the freeway?? I have 3.73's an di had 2.73's before. Since you have 2.73's i take it your an A4 and no way in hell would you like 4.10's. Plus at the track you would run out of gear and shift into 4th. I spin 2700 rpm's at 70. With 410's you would be over 3K. I would say ditch the whole i dea of trying to beaf up a 10 bolt and just save the cash and buy a 12 bolt or 9". I bough the whole rebuild kit with gears and the TA cover. The last time i launched in Nitto's i broke 6 teeth off the ring gear. I have been thru 2 sets in the last couple of months and it was just a waste of money cause you will never get it to take the power if you plan on modding alot in the future. Save it.... but thats just my .02 cents.

I have 4.10's in my 2000 A4 and i love em...great low end, plus i still only turn 26-2800 rpms running 70mph. only problem I've run into is the 4.10's combined with the 3600 stall blows off 275/40-18 F1's BAD! traction will be your new problem.

3.73s are plenty unless you're main focus is ET and you need the extra .05 or you have a 7000 rpm cam in the car. 4.10s will be like loosing your OD on the highway.
3.42s are good compromise for street & strip. a lot more responsive, they tame a high stall converter's looseness, and still have decent highway RPMs. Easier to launch on the street with 3.42s than with higher gears too.
