A factory CD changer from either a Camaro or Firebird from 98 or newer will work in your 98 as long as you have a cassette head unit. The 98 CD head unit didn't support an external changer.
Changers from other GM models may or may not work. For example, the Corvette changer is designed to run only in the upright position (on its side) but the f-body changer is designed to lay flat.

is there any reason if i put the changer in an 01 camaro with a cd player in it that it wouldnt work? could it be that the cd player isnt made to work with the changer? i tried it on an 01 with a cd player and it wouldnt spit out the magazine...

Compatibility with the head unit has nothing to do with ejecting the magazine. As long as the changer has power it should be able to load and eject the magazine - it doesn't have to be connected to a head unit at all.
All 2000 and newer f-body head units support the external changer. The only way an 01 wouldn't work is if the head unit was replaced with an older model or there is something wrong with the HU, wiring, or changer.

well from what your're saying it sounds like it should eject the magazine no matter what if its plugged in...well it makes noises when its plugged in and sounds like its about to eject it but nothing happens...gotta be the changer right? its clearly getting power, the lights inside come on and mechanisms move but no ejection...

well im wanting to get rid of mine. i just got a new deck and subs so i dont really need it anymore. If you know anyone who would want a stock head unit and the 12 disc changer out of a 99 camaro let me know. i could always use the extra money
